This is a reminder that the first annual Barbeque for the Interior people will be at my house (Kamloops) on Sunday Sept 9/2007 @ 3:00 PM. The BBQ is at my place and I'll be supplying ribs with my secret BBQ sauce. Just bring your own beer.

Good thing it was short notice, we barely had enough ribs as it was.
BTW Glenn, I'm going to be bringing the car back to Kamloops sometime in the next couple of weeks to run on the dyno in case you want to observe the proceedings.

Re: Anyone from the Interior of BC?
Glad you guys had a good time. I went to the show in Kelowna and met fellow third gener WhiskeyChick and her 87 GTA (it looks even better in person.
Anyway, other than that the show was sort of dissapointing. I'm not really sure why There were tons of cars there (probably 400+) but there were only 3 third gens and we were sort of lost in the shuffle. They stuck me beside a motorcycle builder's display. Anyway, if I had more notice I might have gone to kamloops too.
Maybe next time plan it in advance and check how many will show. I don't mind bringing my own food or chiping in on the bill. it would be nice to meet some fellow third geners once in awhile.

That's why I don't do car shows. There's nothing there that I want to see. I'm not interested in shiny, I'd rather look at the ugly rustbuckets in the pits at the race track.

2 4th gens, 3 3rd gens, 2 second gens and 1 1st gen that I saw, thats it and apparently there was 740 some odd entries...
Bah! Had I known i would have loved to come meet the fellow F-Body boys...
Hey, is there an F-Body club up here local? Haven't seen/heard of anything....
On another note, Anyone going to the Osoyoos drags this weekend?? If so see ya there!

Not really. If we started calling it a club, we'd have to organize and have meetings and all that garbage, and that would be a lot of work and a waste of valuble beer drinking time.

Just moved to Penticton, and I dont really have alot of friends yet, figured its an easy way to meet people with the same interests as I

Re: Anyone from the Interior of BC?
Before I had my operation; everytime I've tried to organize something, everyone jams out at the last minute. Now that I had my spinal surgery on my neck, it is really hard for me to make any committments. I find it easier to do on "short notice" as my health is a limiting factor and people usually follow through if they make a committent on short-notice.
Aperion (Chris), sure I'll pop down for the dyno (though health may be a limiting factor). I would also like to attend Ashcroft (though that is probalby pushing it for me). I wish I had my WB (it's currently with my buddy in the US - we went half on the cost). I've always wanted to compare the results from the LM-1 to a dyno's WB.

I wouldn't mind comparing my WB either, but it's such a mickey-mouse arrangement that I'm probably just going to buy a new one soon anyway.
The dyno should be interesting. I've never used a load-cell like a Mustang before, only an inertial like a Dynojet.

Well I got my valvecover oil leak fixed, i think. It turns out I just need to get my torque-wrist recalibrated. I changed the gaskets anyway though.
Now I can get back to my reading... "Automobile Driving Self-Taught: An Exhaustive Treatise on the Operation, Management, and Care of Motor Cars" by Thomas H. Russell, M.E., LL.B., copyright 1909... full of all kinds of useful info:
Automatic carburetors... dare to dream.
Or even better yet:
This book is gold I tell you... I don't know how I ever managed to drive without it.
Now I can get back to my reading... "Automobile Driving Self-Taught: An Exhaustive Treatise on the Operation, Management, and Care of Motor Cars" by Thomas H. Russell, M.E., LL.B., copyright 1909... full of all kinds of useful info:
The carburation lever, when such is fitted, is the next that requires attention. Seeing that the piston can only be made to travel at a comparatively slow rate when operated by the starting handle, it is necessary to put the carburation lever in such a position that nearly the entire volume of air passes round the spraying nipple. Most carbureters nowadays are automatic, so that the correct proportion of air and gas are approximately assured at every revolution.
Or even better yet:
Always carry a piece of bread somewhere on your car, says a practical French motorist; rye bread for choice. Rye bread is sometimes difficult of acquisition in this country, so a good wheat bread may suffice. The bread is not to be stored against a prolonged "panne" (i.e., "trouble"), and consequent famine in the depth of the wilds, but because under certain circumstances the staff of life can be of much avail in directions other than that of alimentation. A slight leak in a radiator can be most efficiently, although temporarily, staunched by means of a paste made from bread kneaded with the fingers. The paste must be well kneaded, then spread over the leaky part, and worked in with some tool which will do duty as a spatula, just in the way painters work up their colors on a palette.

Ok, now it turns out they don't run the dyno on Saturdays, and they're booked for next week so the earliest I could get in would be Monday the 24th. Maybe I'll go to Ashcroft for a little test and tune on the 22nd, and then do the dyno afterwards. Oh well, at least it'll be ready for spring.

Osoyoos is a little far, especially when there's not even a real track to run on.

What were you doing when code 33 first appeared? Idling? Cruising? Accelerating?

Re: Anyone from the Interior of BC?
Washed my engine bay actually, was fine before that, and code 33 after..
But got it figured out i think, the seal on the MAF was gone and water got inside, so I pulled out all the old seal, force air dried it, and then used urathane to seal it back up, and driving it home there was no code....
So hopefully i got it fixed
And yea its a little far but its alot of fun
and Im working on my launch more then anything sooo, 1/8th mile is long enough :P

Re: Anyone from the Interior of BC?
If you only need 1/8 mile, Thunder Mountain would probably be better than waiting once a year to run in Osoyoos. You'd have a proper launch area there instead of a borrowed runway. You'd just have to put up with the disgusting altitude.

Thunder mountain ran it's last race of the season this past weekend. I ran up there a couple times when I first bought my car but the track wasn't all that good and I found I didn't really like drag racing either. I perfered autocrossing the car instead.
My car has thrown a code 33 at me as well, a number of years ago I was driving to vancouver in a pretty good rainstorm and the MAF got damp and threw the code. the engine ran okay though on the highway. The next day the sun was out and dried everything out and it was fine. Even if you do have an MAF failure you can unplug it and the engine will go into a mode that will allow you to limp the car to a shop or home (done that before)

Re: Anyone from the Interior of BC?
Been to thunder mountian, traction isnt so great, not for the streets anyways. And thunder mountians 2 races of the year are over, I went. Osoyoos actually has 5 races this year, and they have better traction, and at the worst, its the same as thunder, and it also doesnt have the altitude issues.
Sides, I like racing, Ill go to as many as I can
And yea hopefully my code 33 stays away, I just changed the MAF last year cause my original one died on me

Re: Anyone from the Interior of BC?
Thunder Mountain only runs twice a year now? That's pretty weak. I never went because I couldn't stomach the idea of only running an 1/8th. The altitude didn't bother me too much since I'd just moved from Calgary, and I was living at Big White, so the track would have been downhill from me anyway.

And im going to try to hit up ashcroft once this year, last 1/4 mile I ran was Thunder in the Valley last year.

You've only got 2 more chances left to do Ashcroft this year, but I guess that's just as many as you had all year in Kelowna anyway.

Also, make sure you clear the code. If you have a service situation in the future, the code 33 will still be there and could result in an incorrect diagnosis if someone checks the codes for clues.
Aperion/Chris, I will see how my medical condition is and if I can tolerate sitting up that long (without taking too many drugs). But I would like to join you at Ashcroft - but only as a spectator. I'll know more as the week progresses and what my doctor says.
Were you going by yourself or do you have others also coming? I was just wondering if you have a ride should your car break something (we know how that seldom happens at the track heh, heh).

WC, whatever you do, NEVER wash under the hood on an EFI car. There are too many electronic sensors and water fries them. I learnt that lesson back in 1991 when I first got my GTA and decided to wash my engine.
Luckily, my car was on warranty and my sister worked in the service department - so there were no questions asked.

And I did clear the code thanks

Also, I went to the drags (Saw a SWEET 3rd gen firebird full drag car, no other f-bodies) and shaved 0.70 off my best time in the 1/8th mile

The Firdbird drag car, it wasn't a bright red was it? If so the company I used to work for powdercoated the tube frame and interior. The owner later sent use a pic of the car at the track.

So what exactly is the time you are heading? If I go, I would prefer to follow in case I have severe pain and need someone to take over driving duties (since there will be two of you). I should be fine (I'll take the heavy-duty pain-killers); this would only be a pre-caution.

Re: Anyone from the Interior of BC?
I won't be going anywhere without a slope to park on for a week or so. I think I broke a couple teeth off my flywheel gear so the starter won't engage. I alreadt pulled the starter and replaced the soluniod but that wasn't it. A Mechanic friend figures that the gear teeth broke off and while we're at it I should replace the clutch as well (it's 100,000km old)
So for the past couple day's I've had to park on hills and 'clutch-drop' the car to start it.

Chris, I am sorry, but I don't think I will be able to make it. I am having problems with my neck (my prescription was increased in potency and I am in no shape to drive or ride that far.
I hope the weather will be good for you and that we can do this again when I am not in such poor physical shape.
But I'm open to another "beer & ribs" deal in the next few weeks.

Re: Anyone from the Interior of BC?
It was still raining here on Saturday afternoon, so I decided not to take a chance on driving all the way to Ashcroft just to get rained out. I did take the car to the dyno today at Enhanced Autoworks in Kamloops though. I would have called you Glenn, just in case you were feeling up to spectating, but as usual I forgot to bring your phone number along. It turned into an all-day affair anyway.
First, it's a good thing I didn't actually make it to Ashcroft, because although I staunched the minor oil leaks at idle and cruise, it turns out that the front of the oil pan absolutely hemmorages at high RPM. I would have oiled the track down something fierce.
The second problem was that the Mustang dyno wouldn't read the engine speed correctly because of the MSD. It showed an idle speed of over 14,000 RPM. We had to put a reflective tape on the balancer and use an optical pickup, but on the first few tries as the engine torqued over, the optical sensor couldn't see the reflector anyway and we lost the RPM signal anyway.
Once that was straightened out, we made a couple of successful pulls. One small surprise was that the 383 seems to tame the cam down a bit more than I had expected, with peak power coming in at around 4500 RPM, instead of the 5k or so that I was expecting. The venerable old Thermoquad did do a perfect job of consistently metering fuel across the whole pull, but the out-of-the-box mixture on the carb was a somewhat fat 10.0:1. There was a bit of a misfire problem that didn't go away at all during the day, which might be due to a too-large plug gap, or too cold of a plug.
I'd brought along my collection of antique TQ tuning-parts, so I started a jet-swap. The shop is mostly geared towards FI cars, especially imports, so I was left alone in the dyno cell to tinker with my ancient technology. One thing I did appreciate was that they told me not to worry about the time I took, they had nothing else booked for the cell for the day, and they'd only charge me for time spent actually pulling.
The only secondary jets I had that were leaner than the stock .137s were .131s, so I put those in and put the carb back together and we tried another pull. It didn't go so well though, because the AFR immediately hit about 8.5:1 and blew the spark out. I'd messed up putting the carb lid back on, and the secondary air door wasn't opening fully. The TQ air door has a variable venturi effect on the secondary spray bars when it's partially open, which serves as a transition enrichment system. The half-open door was pulling a bunch of extra fuel through the secondaries, making it go pig rich.
After fixing that and a break for lunch, we tried it again. The AFR was down to 11.0:1, but still well-metered across the pull. I'll need to either get a couple of smaller sets of secondary jets, or maybe very carefully enlarge the secondary air bleeds to lean it out a little more. I'll also have to take care of the ignition and oil problems before taking the car back in.
The part I liked best though was that despite having occupied the dyno bay for nearly a full day, because of the initial problems getting set up with the RPM signal, and because I was really doing the tuning myself, I only got charged for 1 hour of dyno tuning time. Everyone there was great to deal with, especially my dyno tech Scott. Despite being more of an import tuner shop, everyone there just has a love for cars, regardless of make or model or how they're used.

Well I found my misfire. Two plugs were fouled out with oil deposits. I'd cleaned them after break-in, but maybe too soon.

just curious, what does an hour of dyno time cost these days?

Just to put it on and get some numbers is $75, tuning is $110/hr.

Re: Anyone from the Interior of BC?
I know it's last minute, but anyone doing anything this weekend? I am going to bring the camaro out, first time in a year. Just for the weekend, before storing it again.
Re: Anyone from the Interior of BC?
I just signed up at thirdgen.org, saw this thread, and thought I would jump in.
Only two weeks to go before I park the IROC for the winter, not many driving days left anyways.

Heya, ditto to the seen you around in Kelowna a bit. Actually were you out this saturday? I was down and saw a nice blue marrow rolling around.
Re: Anyone from the Interior of BC?
I was out for a short cruise, I will any day that it's not raining. The ride goes into storage in a week, it's going to be a long wait till spring.

Mine is Black with gold pearl heritage stripes. Though aside from the one day recent outing to pentiction, it has actually not been out in over a year. So you may not have seen it around actually. I'm actually in Westbank.
Re: Anyone from the Interior of BC?
The color combination sounds awesome. Post some pics in the garage.
