Having a POWER problem I think

I am having trouble with my new head unit. It is the Blaupunkt San Jose. It was working for about two weeks, but I did have this problem when I first installed it. It went away, and now after a night at the strip friday it is back. The power comes in and cuts out spontaneously, I do not know what is causing this, and I am hoping it is on the unit itself. I checked all my power wires, and my ground. I think the constant 12v wire is not the problem, because when it comes back on the time and memory are not reset. I changed my switched 12v wire twice so far, and this last time I soldered it to make sure I had a good connection, but the problem still continued. I checked and moved the ground to a new location. Any ideas of what my problem could be?

Where do you have the unit grounded to? You need to make sure it is a good chassis ground. Some installs that I have fixed had ground to a metal frame or something else. I put mine on the body itself with a self tapping screw and scrape the paint to bare metal. Good luck, Thomas

Right now I have it grounded to my body. It is sharing the ground with my MSD box. I will try moving it again to a different location. Thanks for your reply.

Try moving it. Do you have a ground to the chassis of the unit? Try grounding the unit itself to the body of the car also. You will then have two grounds. Also, check your antenna connection. I have seen some radios not work if the antenna is not hooked up. If that does not work, take the HU back and get a new one. Just my .02 worth. Thomas

Ok, I played around with it a little today after work. It seems like the radio looses power when something else is drawing power. Like I turn on a turn signal or step on the brake pedal. Could this be an alternator problem? My voltage guage drops and raises when the turn signal is on, never did this before...also my tach seems to jump around while cruising. This is getting to be a general electric problem. I will post it there to see if I get results there. Thanks

Are you running any subs or amps? I know my voltage meter and tach bounce around when I'm stopped at a stoplight, but not really when I am cruizin, unless I have it WAY up, then it sux power and headlights dimn and stuff.

I am not running any subs or amps. Just the Blaupunkt head unit and blaupunkt speakers all the way around.

After ordering a new alternator from summit, and playing around with my car at work, found that the problem was just a bad battery. Thanks for all your help. I guess I needed a new alternator anyway.
