Yeah, I've head of memphis, good stuff.

What I don't understand is why they went with such an extravagant (read: very expensive) basket/spider for a sub that doesn't have a whole lot of xmax....

this is what the memphis web site says about that:

Triple Nomex Spiders
Keeps the high excursion voice coils aligned.
Double Stack Baskets
Suspends the spiders properly.

3" Diameter Dual 2 Ohm Voice Coil on a 7" long, 8 mil Thick Anodized Aluminum Former
Ensures proper power handling.

Massive 28-Pound Motor Structure

yeah, but there are people achieving MUCH longer throws than it with a more 'normal' setup. ie Adire Brahma, Image Dynamics IDMAX, JL W7 etc. With all of them topping the charts when it comes to extreme SQ with awesome SPL.

I mean, it looks really cool, its a novel idea, other than product identification, I don't see the need....unless they have plans for another sub using that basket/spider assembly that will double the current xmax in which case, Daym.

My buddies has three 12's in his civic in a sealed box. He is sponsored by Memphis. I whish I would have listened to him when he first got his. He told me if I wanred to buy some subs I should do it now. I waited and the prices have gone through the roof!! Good system.

dang mcss383 sounds like a real audiophile. you seem to know your stuff. the brahma, w7, and IDMAX would have to be my top 3 favorite subs out. to answer your question though, yes i have heard of memphis. they make some stellar amps. take their 500d amp and two of adire's shivas and you got an awesome combo.

agreeing on the top 3 sub list. brahma, idmax, and w7 are sick subs. my top 3 budget subs (under $200) are alpine type r (got a 12in dvc), adire audio shiva, and blueprint. memphis does make some killer equipment. i was gonna buy a couple of the studio amps when my old sys got stolen, but used the money to get a better camaro.
