Custom Building Sub Box

Custom building Sub Box

I am going to custom build a 2 12" sub box for my 91 camaro and need to know if anyone happens to have the dimensions on the box they had built or bought that would help me out a lot. I am not going to build all the way down to the bottom of the well because the subs I have have to have .9 to 1.2 cubic feet per sub so i only need the box to drop to the ledges in the well. SO if anyone would help me out a little bit I would greatly appreciate it.

Chris

if you go for a custom box think about building one that points the subs into the hatch. Just dont point them straight up i think that is the worst way to make a box. just think about other ways than straight up goodluck!

Pointing straight up should be fine, most of the poeple here build their boxes like that. I had a box that pointed on a slight angle, but for the most part up and it sounded fine. The whole hatch area acts as a box and most of the bass is diflected towards you.

When your saying point them into the hatch, what exactly do you mean?

I have had 2 mtx 8000 10's with a rockrord 500 watt amp and the box is straight up. i was trying out a friends speakers and he had a a hatchback style dual 10 box that fit in the hole of the hatch perfectly with the subs facing down. the box wedged in with space for sond to come out on each side. it was like a bandpass box. it was to alpine type s's which cost about half as much as the mtx's and sounded much better. just from my experience if the subs face up you can hear them move and it dosent sound as good.

hear them move? isn't that the point? if you're hearing something besides the bass, then something isn't quite right... whether it's distortion or a screw vibrating somewhere or whatever other possibility it might be.

A cone is supposed to reproduce sound by moving. If it's producing something that's not supposed to be there, then get a new speaker. Just my .02

All im saying is go into best buy where the subs are. play any sub facing youo and then turn them around facing into the self or a corner and they will sound much better. it is the whole principle of a bandpass box.

do you have any links or info on technical data for this stuff? I can't really say I know much about bandpass principles; it would be intresting to learn. Just being honest here, but I think all that's really happening when you turn the speaker around is that the basket is blocking the higher frequencies from being projected, so it sounds cleaner. But hey, whatever works, right?

Maybe I'll try a search. If you have any more info, post it.

what 86z28 is saying is:
the speakers sound good bouncing off of the hatch glass, but they sound better bouncing off of the bootom of the storage area and then the glass.
I have my sub in my house pointing in the corner and it is much louder than pointing it anywhere else.
I read on here somewhere that someone said they tested this and they gained like 3-4dB. You might want to do a search for it.

It was me at my recent constest that gained 3.6 db's facing them INTO the storage area. The lower notes hang around alot more tho, which makes it sound crappier, but doesn't matter in an SPL contest. ( Which I won by the way ) . SO if your going for SPL, face them down, going for clarity and precision, face them up
