Tell me about boss audio

I have a friend who has a Boss 600x2 amp that he said he would trade me for my Sony (see sig. for specs on sony). The only thing is, he only paid like $250 for it. I thought 600 watts would be pretty expensive, more than $250 anywayz. I need a new amp to run my Alpine Type-R 4 ohm sub cuz the sony wont run it the way I want it ran. The Boss should run it he said, but I'm gonna hook it up and make sure. But is it worth the trade? Give me some info please.

just hook it up to your system, if it sounds better, do the trade; if not, don't! simple

For entry level stuff, I wouldn't trust their amps, for less than that ($250) you can buy a JBL 600.1 that IS reliable and DOES put out at least its rated amount.

Yes it puts out at least it rated if not more. But, the boss would be "free" to him. I would say if you can spend $205 on the JBL get it, you alpine will rock harder and you will have more room to grow with. If you cant afford it, you might want to listen to it like mud said and trade it.

Boss is crap. There's a reason it was $250. Actually, he got porked if he paid that much. Their "600" watt amps usually sell for $150-200.

DON'T DO IT! That is definitly not a fair trade. I have one of the Boss 600x2 amps(Riot 635). I paid $105 for it and it was worth the money. Isn't worth much more than that, but it does its job well, powering 2 12" Polk GNX subs. Here is a link for where to get it for $105 <http://www.millionbuy.com/bosrt635.html> this is the same company that I got my amp from and they delivered quickly. I think that Boss amp and $50 to $100 would be a good trade.

Do NOT do the trade...if you can save up $300, online you can get the JBL 1200.1, and it does real world power around 1300-1400 watts...for what you need, a JBL 600.1 will do fine..

I talked to him today and he said he payed $200 for it, and that if I want to listen to it b4 I buy it, thats fine. I have no money and need a new amp to run my Alpine, and if it sounds good, I'll prolly trade. I have to pay for so much other crap right now it's not even funny. An amp is lower on my list right now. If I can get more watts out of trade, then I'll go for it and sell the Boss later when I have money for the amp....I was thinking Audiobahn .

How exactly does trading a decent amp for a junk amp benefit you?

From looking at other posts about amps, people seem to put Sony right down there with Boss.

The Boss Riot635 amp does 600x2 peak @ 4ohms, but the RMS figure at 4 ohms is only 200W(which is right in the range for my Polk GNX). You should look at the sony and see what it does RMS, which is the real figure you need to look at to see how powerful an amp is. Definitly don't think that just because it has a higher peak wattage that it is better than your Sony.

I bought a boss 455 Yeah it was Nice and they were driving the 2 10"cerwin vega HED wolfers. Till I just cranked it to loud one day. The two wires in the back of the cone touched and fried one speaker and the amp. I opened the amp and there was a burned up transistor in there. So who is to blame cerwin or boss. I dont know but the amp sounded good while it lasted. I just though the overflow protection would shut off the amp in that case. Guess not.

Most good amps will have a circuit for this...some lower lines won't, hence the damage.

I wouldn't put a BOSS product in any car. That Alpine is a sweet sub and worthy of a much better amp. It would be like running a porche with a geo metro engine.

Ok, so I traded my sony for a Fosgate 300.2 for now, until I can get a better amp, then he gets his Fosgate back and I get my Sony back to sell. What do you suggest for that Type-R DVC 4ohm 300 rms, 1000 peak sub of mine? Oh ya, I'm not gonna take the Boss.

I believe the sony is rated at 190x2@2 ohms, 760 peak, or 150x2@ 4ohms 600 peak. I'm not for sure though, so don't hold that to me or anything.

If you think that thing can get anywhere near 200 watts RMS, I've got some serious news for you. Do me a favor and check to see what size fuse that amp has and let me know what it is.

speaking of BOSS amps and stuff there is a BOSS 1100 watt amp at this pawn shop with like 550 X 2 per channel. I think this is right cuz I just glanced at it. They want $170 for it. what do you think or does boss suck like legacy

For amps, oh yeah! That 1100 watt amp prob only makes 300-400 at best, and that would prob be with the amp at the clipping level. lol

$170 from pawn shop for a VERY questionable amp, or $220 for a very nice 600w amp....

$170 is way too much for an amp like that, esp. at a pawn shop. Try $75 to $100 for a used one. The boss has a 30 amp fuse in it, but i have blown it twice so I may put a bigger one in. So if it is a 30amp fuse then it is doing 200W RMS total or so around.

Let's end this with BOSS is junk. Save your money and buy something that you won't replace two weeks after you buy it and realize it is junk. Spending $170 on one of these makes no sense to me because you are only $100 to $150 away from something decent that isn't garabage. It won't take that long for anyone to save up that much extra and it'll be way worth it.

If I could get one of those KX600.1 right now, I would glady use it and film the blowing of my type-R, if it blew, cuz I love warranties! Could do the Type-R, rated at 1000 Watts peak, and then test the ol' Sony, rated at 1200 watts peak and see which one does better .
