I just bought a nice set of Cerwin Vega 4"x6" plate speakers for my 1991 TA.
The driver's side speaker won't fit. Looks like the air ducts are in the way. There is a stock hole formed into the ducts, but the speaker magnet seems too big.
I'm sure this is a common problem with the plate speakers.
How do I get it in?
Thanks.

i have this same problem with my 4x6 plate cerwin vegas, let me know what u do. I was considering grinding a hole in the air duct with a dremel, and then covering it with some duct tape, but i havent done anything with it yet.
they will fit,I have the c-v's. I just had to wiggle them in at an angle, and I was only able to use one of the securing screws, but they arent going anywhere. BTW they sound pretty good too, even though I got a dash mat bloking half the sound.
I was wiggling them and pushing them in. Do you have the tweater to the center of the car?
Did you have to push hard on them to get the magnet to set in place?
Looks like if you cut some of the upper mount plastic on the dash that they would fit better in place. Don't want to cut anything though.
Thanks.

I had the same problem installing Infiniti Kappa 4X6's in my bird. I used my porting tool and die grinder to open up the whole a little bit (not on the vent ducting), wiggled, added a few choice words and it finally fit. I also cut out some of the material on the back of the dash pad to hear the speakers better.
Hang on a minute DONT cut anything!! They do fit without cutting. Gimme a few minutes and I'll go take a few pics. BRB
this is on the Drivers side, the crossover keeps it from setting all the way down, like maybe an 8th or 1/4of an inch is not flush
oh yea, I did have to cut away some material from the dash pad itself, just some foam/vinyl from inside the speaker recess. It sounds terrible (YOU CUT YOUR DASH PAD!!! WTF!!) but its not too bad. 88GTAinRI did the same I think. I didn't realize that the materiel was in the way untill I snapped these pics, I missed it on the install...so I ended up cutting anywayz. Good luck
Looks like a lot to get them in!
I was considering swaping them into my 1980 TA and taking the standard out for the 1991 TA.
Ashame they don't consider the fit of our cars.
Thanks for the photos.

yea, I dunno if I would even LOOK at a 91 vert funny, much less start cutting here and there, but my 89 hardtop has no such problems

Yea. I am modifying my 1991 TA convertible, but if I can do a speaker swap with my 80', looks like the way to go.
Thanks for the heads up on the install!!!
