Drivers side lockbox airspace

Anybody know about how much airspace i can get if i build a box from 3/4" MDF in the driver's side lockbox space? Thanx. Just a general estimate will be good enough.

i really would like to build a stealth box there for my Boston Pro 10 and i wanted to make one out of mdf so i could have it stashed away until i got the chance to build one out of fiberglass. i dont have the time to build one out of glass since im in college, away from my trusty garage. i cant put one in the passenger side because i need the spare, and i dont want pay someone to build one, i want to do all this myself, just like my kicks. any suggestions? Thanx.

If you really want to do it yourself, I would suggest making a temporary box either above your gas tank, or in the well. It would be a lot easier. Besides, it's only temporary right?

If you are going to get "crazy" with your system I would recommend putting a second battery in the drivers side lockbox. You will need to put a brace under the bottom to support the battery though.

what does the wiring look like for the extra battery? does the power cable go to the original car battery and the neg goes to the body of the car?

I moved my battery from the front to the back. I just ran 4 ga from the battery to the main wire that used to hook up to the battery when it was up front. The negative side is grounded to the chassis. If I were to do it again I'd use a bigger gauge wire, but I already had 4 ga. ran through the car.

that's a lot of wire hanging out of that airspace.

Hey Rez, my dad has a sh-t load of ground wire i think for housing. It's not as finely stranded as speakers wire, it looks like there's about 10-15 strands - 4 guage. Would this work fine for running from pos to a distribution block and have 2- 8awg outs?

It would work. The thicker strands of wire actually increase conductivity. The fine stranded automotive type is mostly for flexibility when installing in a car. House wire will work, but it'll be harder to install and won't look very nice.

true, but it's just flat black wire... so... i guess it won't be too bad, but people might get confused as to what's going on with it. black wire = ground... red wire = pos...
ah, whatever, i'm out to impress anyone with my wire... just my sound.

I noticed the extra battery in your (thumbnail picture) lock box. What did you do to support the battery in place? Do you have any other pics on the Battery support? I greatly appreicate this. I have a 1986 Firebird. Thanks..Ozzy

Re: Drivers side lockbox airspace

Wow, six year old thread!!

Yeah, I have a battery back there too. Installation required removing the plastic trim panel (yes, the one with the door in it), then removing the cardboard lining of the "box" (the battery is too big to fit through the door). I then had brackets bolted to the floor area behind the trim panel and the battery installed and clamped down before the trim was reinstalled.

You could always yank out the spare tire and mount the battery in its place using a BMR battery relocation bracket.
