They use an adhesive, they don't use tacks or staples

3M makes a product called 'High Strength 90 Spray Adhesive.' It's easy to use, pretty damn strong, and bonds carpet to MDF and fiberglass effectively. Should be in most larger hardware stores.

my next question is, how exactly does one carpet a box, is ther a general rule to it, is it one continuous piece or does it overlap in places? does anyone have a certain design or pattern to follow a rule even?

Practice. There's no patented way to carpet a box. You definately don't overlap though. Use common sense and make sure that you put your seams in the most inconspicuous spot (i.e. not on the front of the box). After you do a couple hundred you'll get good enough to make the seams invisible.

try running over the seams with a knife, ....kinda likea scraping motion, itll rough up the carpet and you wont see the seams....

True. On a thirdgen box you can get off easy by just doing the top part, but with more conventional trunk boxes, it's going to require some more work.

On boxes that have multiple sides that will be seen, I have always sewed the seems together. Nothing fancy, just stitching them up so that way in the future when you can normilly see some mdf you wont. It is not a needed step but it turns out nice and only take a couple of minutes.

let two pieces overlap, then take a razor blade and cut through the two pieces where they overlap, making sure you are cutting both pieces, giving you two pieces that fit exactly together

first rule is use lots of sharp blades prefferably carpet blades, they are double sided and easier to handle, try to use a continuious piece and put your seam on the bottom of the box, and try to keep enough excess on the side so you can cut a flap that is connected on top and seals on sides and bottom. also 3m 90 adhessive spray works best
