Why no boxes with this angle? (know-it-alls enter!)

Ok, I've seen countless boxes on this site, and they are all bad *** lookin. But the thing is, they alwayz have the subs facing up towards the trunk lid. Now I was talking to with my dad about this, and he said that if those subs went from pointing up at the trunk lid to down in the well pointing towards the end of the car, they would hit harder and sound a louder. So I went out and played with my sub. First off, you have to realize what kind of box I have...

I only have one of the boxes and A silver Xplod instead of the crappy red ones. Dont say anything bout sony, I have a Type-R 12"sitting in my room as we speak, I am building a box worthy of such a sub (and it wont fit in those boxes). But anywayz...I had it sitting up where the 2 boxes are in the pic and it didnt sound to bad. Then I turned it around so the box angle was angling with the hatch instead of against it. That sounded a little better. Then I dropped the box down into the well and WOW what a difference. When people ask me how many subs I have I tell them to get in and guess. They alwayz guess two, and one said three (he was drunk though, so I don't count that one, lol) My next box (the one for the Type-R 12") has it facing towards the back of the car, and I have 1.347 cubic feet of airspace, the box can be made bigger (maybe 1.5-1.75 cubic feet or so), and enough room to add another Type-R (which will happen eventually ). You could probably squeeze 3 10" subs down there in this position as well. So I guess my question is...why doesn't anyone do this if it hits so much harder and its more steathier? (if steathier a word). And why does it hit harder and sound better? I've heard that the sound rolls of the glass, but I have also heard that the soundwaves stay together better when you face the sub towards the *** end...

Go here and read...... http://www.installer.com/tech/aiming.html

Our cars don't have a 'trunk' but you'll get the idea.

As long as the sound waves don't have a chance to reflect off the rear and come back to run out of phase with the original sound waves then facing them up will work just as well.

Where you have the Sonys in that pic is giving the sound waves plenty of room toward the back of the car to reflect off of a couple different places and that just adds to the amount of cancellation problems.

Excellent info AJ, thanx alot . I just wish that they had a pic of a sub facing up....

BTW...I dont think I mentioned one more move of my sub...I moved it to where it would be if I angled it up with the box in the well like most camaro boxes are built and it still sounded a bit better and hit a lil harder down in the well...but the only way to really tell would be with 2 different boxes, same sub and amp, and Db them to see which is louder...might have to build 2 boxes then sell one....

I've got a tiny sub tube (I think the actually speaker is only like 6") down in the well, and ppl always think I have at least of pair of 8s cause the bass just resinates out of there. Hey disturb, those wouldn't happen to be the Alpine type-Rs would they? How much did you get 'em for?

Unfortunately, they are only mere Xplods. BUT! I have a Type-R in my room, just building a box for it right now. After I get a new amp, I'll get a new sub as well. I bought mine for $212.xx from the local stereo shop, and will buy the second one from ikesound.com, that way if one blows I can just take it back to the store here instead of sending it to ikesound.com .

mine is like that but more at an angle sloping with the hatch. i decided it was to much work to measure for the well so i built a plain jane box.

Yes, those pics are of the same box. One is with it installed and the flush-mount panel in place, and the other is with it sitting up high to show the box off. The box only has 1 12" JL W0 in it. I never compared that box to a conventional one with the same sub. I just built the box, installed the stuff and listened to it. Considering that it's an 8 ohm sub being driven by a low powered Kicker Impulse amp, I have to say that I'm extremely impressed with the output. As for sound quality, likewise, I'm impressed. It sounds clean, as a W0 should. It's got a nice powerful low end.
