installing 4th gen deck, need help
hi, i bought a head unit from a 98 firebird...it plugged right in to my old wire harness, and it works great. however, the mounting brackets/holes are different. i took my old brakets off from my old deck, but the 4th gen ones look like they are one piece with the whole radio casing.
anyone ever switched to a 4th gen deck have any helpful hints before i hack it up??
also, there is one extra spot for a wire harness (it came with the extra harness too)..if i remember correctly it had like 6 pins/wires? it is a Monsoon deck....could this be something special for that?

I'm doing the samething. Took 98 camaro deck and installed it. I had to use a dremel and file to modify the brackets as I didn't want to take apart the radio to try and modify. Also I had to modify the back of the radio pod for my car, as it made the radio stick out and wouldn't mount flush. The 4th gen radio is longer. Also I believe that extra plug is for the factory CD changer based on the reasearch I've done. Hope this helps.

Just out of curiosity, why did you get a fourth-gen deck as opposed to an aftermarket stereo?
thanks Grant...i got a dremel for Christmas too...woo hoo.
fyre...my deck went bad, so i needed a replacement. i didnt need some fancy features, and am not planning to build a system. for me, its more important for the lights to match the rest of the dash lights (hard to find a new aftermarket deck with oraqnge), and for it to fit and look factory (ive seen some nice 1 din mounts, but i prefer this) plus, when people get new aftermarket units, they sell them cheap enough to persuade me on ebay

There is an excellent article in the HOW TO section on another website, under the PROJECTS link, on how to put a 4th gen stereo in a 3rd gen car. One of them covers how to change the brackets out. Great articles, as I am doing the same.
