4th GEN. RADIO INSTALL, HELP!
4th GEN. RADIO INSTALL, HELP!
OK, Guys and Gals. I need a little help. I think I might of gotten in over my head on this one. I recently bought a third gen. camero with a missing radio and cut wiring harness. I bought a factory delco unit off ebay that was removed from a 95 T/A, and has CD and 7 peg equalizer. The unit was supplied with the plug-in's and about 6 inches of the harness. The unit has a double plug-in on the left with a total of 15 wires. Furthermore, it has another plug-in in the center with a total of 6 wires, and one of those is an exposed wire. Now I'm no genius, but I've got too few wires to match up with all the wires on the back of this delco unit. Does anyone have any suggestions or wiring diagrams to help in conquering this nightmare. Thanks in advance.

Do a search on this subject, like "4th gen stereo in 3rd gen", there is a very recent topic that contains a wiring diagram for just such a problem. Also, please see the article/tech write-up at the beginning of this website regarding the same. I am doing the same thing, and found them very helpful.

Here are a couple of links to follow:

Here is the one I was thinking about, it is on another 3rd Gen website, but very helpful...go to the topic on sidebar entitled "Articles/How To's", and click on the "Projects" link, will take you to several great articles on installing a 4th gen stereo in a 3rd gen car, with wiring diagrams.

Thanks so much for the help. However, one question is still unanswered. What does the six wire plug-in go to? The wiring diagrams shown on the other site only mentioned a plug-in for my the fifteen wire plug-in. Hope yall can help. Thanks in advance.
It all depends on what year your third gen is. If it is 87 and older you have a different harness than a fourth gen. If you have an 88 up third gen than you have the same harness as the fourth gen. The pug in the middle of the fourth gen radio is for steering wheel controls. That is if it is not a bose stereo. If this is the case it will not work in your car. If it is not a bose radio and you have an 87 or older third gen than to make that work is simple. All you need to do is go to your local Best Buy or Circuit City and get a reverse harness for an 88 up general motors car. Test your leads in your car and wire accordingly.

Why did you buy 4th gen stock radio? Doesnt the fourth gens have external amps? My frinds 95' Z has external amps. By the by, those systems are a bit*h to wire up an amp and subs when there is the stock head unit in tack. It sucked!

gm wire color codes might just get you started
i suggest u do as i did to install a aftermarket radio in my car:
1 clip connectors from 80's gm car at u pull it (or but from junk yard)
2. wire it to your original wires.
3. use aftermarket harness adapter to wire in other radio. yes it is alot of to do but at least you can put factory cheapo back later. oh and if you don't want to do that just wire in the new one using the guides people have listed and get to crankin out the tunes.
