inverted subs
hey im fairley new to the whole system thig. i got a small one in my 90 rs and i want more! i have been noticeing people have been mounting there subs with the baskets out of the box. what is the gain buy doing this. i thought that when u feal the bass in a song is from all the air that the sub is moveing in the car. well if the basket is in the way how doesit even work? what does it do? and what are the benifits of doing this.? im more into the sound quality of systems as oposed to haveing big ole bass. but i like big ole bass
im thinging about runing 3 10w6's in my camaro. how should i mount them? any help would be aprecated!
im thinging about runing 3 10w6's in my camaro. how should i mount them? any help would be aprecated! when you mount the subs like that, it accomplishes two things: you see the cone (which may be good or bad, i personally dont like it), and you free up some space inside the box. in other words, the cone assembly might take up .25 cubic feet of room inside your box -- if you move the cone to the outside, you get that extra quarter of a cubic foot of "free" airspace in your box. i dont find it that useful, and then you have a huge cone sticking up out of your box--but some people like the look, or need the space, or whatever.
Like mudaholic said, you do get more space inside the box. but not nearly a quarter cubic foot. Depends on the sub, it's usually only about .03 to .1 cubic feet. Like I said though, it also depends on what type of sub you run.

I have my subs mounted with the magnet out. It sounds the same as mounting it the other way. The only difference is that you have to reverse the polarity, so the cone moves out of the box. The only thing I can say is if you like the basket, mount it with the magnet out of the box. If you like the cone, mount it the regular way.

yeah they are pretty cool. i prefer these alpines tho. i just like the look better. very good sub to
same thing i did....mine are 10s. I'm going to make a snug fit fiberglass box for the bottom of the well for these when the weather gets more friendly, the subs are gonna be mounted the same way.

I have seen some setups w/ one sub backwards and one sub regular...any bonus' w/ that type of setup? Also, Alpine baskets rock, and so Do the audiobahn flame Q's
. And how do you reverse polarity? Just hook the pos up to the neg and the neg up to the pos or what?

im thinging about runing 3 10w6's in my camaro. how should i mount them? any help would be aprecated! As far as the physics of it, and why the sub doesn't have to face out. In order for a speaker to create a sound wave it has to move out and in. If you notice when a speaker is in it's rested position you can push in on it. When in operation, the speaker will move in a certain distance (based on the amplituted [volume] of the sound wave) at a certain speed (based on the frequency of the wave). Then it will move out the same distance at the same speed. So what you get is the same sound wave on each side of the speaker, but they are 180 degrees out of phase. That's why someone earlier said to reverse the polarity of the subs if you mount them with the baskets out. Basically you would hear the sound waves that would be inside the box as opposed to the ones from the front of the speaker, but they are identical.

[QUOTE]As stated above, mounting the sub with the basket out will give you more airspace in the box. While this won't really affect SPL, but it will improve your sound quality.[QUOTE]
How does this improve the sound quality?
Some people have complained of some noise because on some subs there is a vent in the bottom of the magnet that can create some turbulence. Other than that, they should identical.

Now if you listend to music where the subs were pretty much just handling a kick drum, then a smaller enclosure is just fine (that's what I have).
But I'm guessing that if he's wanting to put 3 10w6s in his car, there's a better chance that he'll be listening to beats from timbaland as opposed to ringo starr. In that case a larger enclosure is more desireable.

joezero, i see what you are saying but that statement is a little to generalized. better sound quality does not come from just a bigger box, but from the correct sized one. now, like you said, if you need a little more room to squeeze the correct amount of airspace from a small box, then yes, it could improve the SQ. However, if the box is already the right size, or maybe a little bigger, and you get the extra airspace, it might degrade the quality of sound.
not trying to flame, but for people who are less informed that might read this, they might get the idea that a bigger box is always better, when it is not. boxes are a lot like carbs, you need the right one to make you engine run right. you could run with a carb that is to large or to small, but not at peak perfomance.

I totally agree with you. I generalized about it because I have generally found two things to be true. One, most people have trouble finding enough space in the back of an f-body without taking up from the back seat to the back of the car. Two, most people build their boxes to the minimum specs. So if the sub needs say .65-1.0 cu ft., most people will generally do .65-.75 cu ft. I'm not saying everybody does it, that's just my opinion. But you are definently right that bigger is better only to a certain point, and then you start scaring the girls off.
