Since none of us have absolutely no idea what your skill level and experience level is, there's really no way for us to answer it properly.

How hard is it to swap motors? To the average joe, this rates right up there with nuclear physics and rocket science. To some gearheads, it's an afternoon and a 6-pack.

I know a lot of very talented installers that have failed their MECP tests, and I know of plenty of morons that I wouldn't let hold my crimp connectors that passed it. For the most part, as long as you understand the proper way to do things, you have basic ohm's law knowledge, and you know how to use Bosch relays in non-conventional configurations, you should be able to pass it. Of course, that still doesn't mean you'll be able to get a Mazda door panel off without busting 75% of the clips. :sillylol:

i plan on taking the test myself. you can take a practice test on the mecp web site. didnt do too bad for being an amateur installer. you can also take the tesat at i believe (someone tell me if i'm wrong) at any public library. i was also recommended by many independent smaller shops to work for a CC or best buy. you can get some hands on work and take the test for free. not that i recommend staying at those places for very long. dont wanna become one of those installers everyone makes fun of

I am actually one of the installers everyone makes fun of. Rather I work for cc. I have been there four years and am mecp certified. Honestly it doesnt do anything but look good on a resume. I have met some great installers that didnt pass and some really crappy ones that did. Like was stated earlier just because you can read a book and pass a test doesnt mean you can do the job without breaking stuff or making a mess of an under-dash. One last point, dont judge an installer until you have seen there work. I have fixed a ton of installs from various shops some big some small, the downside to being a large chain is that when someone messes up on the other side of the state or country you look bad too.

yeah, i wasnt directing it at anyone in particular. there are good and bad installers everywhere. cc included. it just happens to be a place where a lot of people start off their installing career, so there is bound to be a few bad apples. i plan on working there myself. but i'm glad i've had time to research the industry and learn some of the skills on my own. too many people do their own thing, whether or not its the right way..... once again, no disrespect 1983ss

no offense taken, I want to know the best places to take my car to as well, if someplace does crappy work than I dont want them to work on my stuff. Circuit is a good place to learn the on the job training and mecp certification. Its the bonus for working for such a large corp. But like I said I didnt take offense.
