not much clearance at all.....you can screw into the carpet to hold down light objects but other than that....the tank is right up against it .....maybe 1/4 inch

i think your best bet would be to put a couple thin strips of wood underneath the carpet to screw the amp to. better to be safe then sorry. especially when it comes to your gas tank

Could you velcro it to the carpet?

What is it that you're wanting to attach up there? A lot of people have just used one solid piece for a sub box at the back and had it extend all the way to the back seat. Then you have a 3/4" thick mounting surface.

There's around 1/2" or 3/4" of space between the gas tank and the floor, BUT, do you really want a bunch of pointy objects 1/4" above your gas tank if you get rear-ended? Forget about screwing something to the floor. It's dangerous and not necessary. I used wide velcro strips to hold an amp to my carpet once and it stuck so good i had to jam a screwdriver into the velcro to get the amp back up. You can also run a board that's attached to the sides, and mount the amps to that. You have enough alternate choices that you don't need to take the risks associated with screwing them down.

well see in my pic here......
my fuse distibution(sp?) block has one screw down into thefloor but see were its all is the tank there. the sony(gold) amp is velroed down,,,the kenwood (black) amp is just sitting there for now. but if you can see I had to screw in longer screws to hold down the front tbar bag hooks. So I have a feeling I already poked it....i think there 1 1/2 screws but I prob only have 1/2" sticking down on the uderside of the floor.
What im going todo was to remove all those screws and stuff and lay a large peice of dimond steel down cavering the rest of the grey carpet. Use that as a monting plate and I was prob going to put atleast 4 screws in each most corners,,,hoping it would be far away from the tank (on the outer most edge or even a few inches underneath the placsic side pieces to hide the screws. My hole point is so someone cant just "grab-and-go" with my stuff.

SCREWING AND HUMPING AND POKING?!?!?!

I thought this was family oriented sight.

:sillylol:

I'd find other means of attaching stuff to the back. I thought I was clear since I was about 1/2 way down the side of the slope. NOPE!!!!!!!

ME GOT GAS LEAKY!!

Had to replace the tank. $135 lesson learned

what id do is take out your carpet and glue a pice of 1/2 or 3/4" piece of MDF directly to the metal of above your gas tank. than you can go crazy with your drill

As for the "grab-and-go", really the best thing to do with interest as to not damage your car is, as what I did, I got some screws that are about 1/4" long and I used them to screw my amp into the carpet, thats it. No worrying about puncturing your gas tank. Honestly, unless the thief was to take my carpet with him, he would have to unscrew them, because it is ON THERE! I gave my amp a good yank to test the integrity of my experiment and was very pleased with the results. Also, judging from where yours are mounted, get limo-tinting...couldn't hurt!!

I forgot about a question I meant to ask in my last quote, do you know how heavy that box you made is? I'm getting ready to change my box setup to something VERY similar to yours. The only problem is I use my car for both sound shows AND drag racing, so the lighter the better. Thanks! (I still say the 1/4" screws into the carpet is the best bet)

1/4" screws on the carpet will work. just imagine drag racing, stompin on the breaks and you get a capacator in the back of the head becuase it wasnt bolted down correctly. and do you think your insurace will cover that half *** attempt at bolting things down if someone breaks in and tears your carpet a little while ripping off your stuff? im thinking no. and if your concerned about weight build yourself a fibreglass box. there are plenty of guids and posts about it here.

As others have said, VELCRO. If you use thick *** velcro, it wont come off unless you really work to get it off. I have mine on there with velcro and just as Jim said, you have to use something to pry it up cause it doesnt want to come off.

NEW UPDATE
I know I need a new tank anyhow so im not too stressed out about the way my old set up was, But i knew i had to change it soon before I get a new tank. So I just finished building my total solution! With an idea from here and there (pics will come soon)!!!!!

Thanks for the suggestions guys!!! but heres the deal:
a - mdf under the carpet sounds actually the best you guys metioned.....but not to thick cause then youll run into problems fiting your side plactic pieces back in,,,unless you just put short peices only under the amps. (plus the weight factor)
b - just small screws in the carpet can be pulled out too easy....theives arnt gentle.

89blackGTA- yes i know velcro is good...like i said in my last post i was useing it on my sony amp...i would of had it on the kenwood but i just got it last summer and didnt buy anymore velcro when i recently ran out. But velcro is garbage for the grab-n-go factor.

90RS305- i do have 5% window tint and yes it will help!!! But living in a small town and I love to have it cranked yould be stupid if you didnt think I had nice stuff in there.
About the wieght...fiberglass is alot lighter then mdf. still tho if your ganna drag have quik conennects on your wires and have a place were you can easly lift it out,,,just take it out before you drag, easy. Or atleast run a fiberglass box instead of mdf anyhow. I never weighed my box. and i wont be removing it to see anytime soon, its not that grab-n-go friendly,, hahahahaha!

Tyler-88- rip the carpet,,on the hump???? ah dude I broke 2 new blades trying to cut it??? This stuff wont ever rip from a little screw. Its got like 2 layers of plastic/rubber in it.

Yeah, actually you are right, that stuff won't rip! When I say I gave my amp a yank to test my experiment, I wasn't exactly gentle myself. Now, just for the sake of saying it, because something tells me your not quite this concerned and it really has nothing to do with screws, but you could go as far as I did. Ever hear of AutoPage? I have this nifty little system that comes with this nifty little pager (yup, looks just like those little things we used to know as forms of communication) and when someone so much as nudges my car, it lets me know. Now you don't know I know, but I know. It does have a verbal alarm (horn) too, but you have to give it a little harder nudge for that. Down here in Arizona, USA, it'll cost me $500 (installed) for the new system (longer range, and has remote start). It works in conjunction with my screws, because it takes some good effort to get them suckers out of the carpet, and by that time I have some sort of blunt object and am standing right behind you. Not gonna go into any detail, but lets just say that situation has occured. Also, ever think of maybe hiding them? I don't know if you show yours or not, but maybe the spare tire well could come in handy....

Tyler-88 is spot on!

I bonded a 6mm MDF sheet to the floor and then cut some new underfelt to go around it. Then put the carpet on top so it was all level. Then bolted the amp to that. Very sturdy. And, if the car is ever sold (?), it can all be removed without any signs it was there!

Andy.

Here's something nobody's mentioned yet, and it works great with Andy's picture!

Run metal strapping underneath your carpet (or hell, on top of the carpet if you wish) to the metal underneath the side panels. Then, your amp bolts to the metal straps. It'll take some extra measuring, but what doesn't? Put a lockwasher onto a bolt. Put the bolt/lockwasher "up" through the steel strap, and poke a hole thru the carpet. Then, on the outside of the carpet, put your amp over this new "stud", and secure it with a nut. The lockwasher underneath the metal strap should keep the stud from spinning once you start tightening things down.

You can buy thin sheets of aluminum or steel, 1/16" thick, at Home Depot. You might even use the "universal hangers" for PVC pipe; it's a 3 foot roll of steel strap that's been drilled for holes, it has a hole every 1/2 inch or so.
