subs, amp, ohms question
subs, amp, ohms question
ok heres the story, my 2 rockford 10 inchers are rated at 4-8 ohms, the box has 4-8 printed on it, the sub has 8 printed on it and the crack hooch at best buy said that they are both 4 and 8 ohm stable. (is that possible?)
heres the next part, my amplifier, JBL 600.1 can run at 4 or 2 ohms, at 4 ohms its putting out 300W and at 2 its putting out 600w. the subs are ran in parallel from the amp and run at 150RMS. i want to know what i'm powering my subs at?
thanks for any info clearing my question up...

First of all, try not to ever buy anything related to car audio from Best Buy. With few exceptions, they don't have a clue as to what is going on. This is proven by the claim that your speakers are "both 4 & 8 ohms". This is simply ignorant. Rockford Fosgate uses the same carton for both their 4 & 8-ohm subwoofers. They apply a sticker to the box indicating which one it actually is. You can also tell by looking on the magnet itself. In your case, it is most definitely 8-ohm speakers. If you have a JBL BP600.1, then your amp is a mono-block amp stable to 2-ohm. Even though the amp is a 'mono' amp, it still has two sets of speaker output terminals to allow for a simpler installation. If you connect each of your Rockford subs to one of the amp's speaker output terminals, you will be running the amp at 4-ohm. In this case, the JBL BP600.1 is rated at 300 Watts R.M.S. output (or 150 Watts output to each speaker). My suggestion would be to take the speakers back (and go to a REAL car audio shop if possible) and exchange them for 4-ohm subwoofers. That way, (after hooking the new woofers up exactly as the previous 8-ohm woofers) the amp would be running at 2-ohm. Then it would be putting out 600 Watts R.M.S. (or 300 Watts to each speaker). Like MAGIC, you just doubled your power for absolutely zero dollars!!!!!
HA! thats what i told the old bizzotch at best buy that said that 4 ohm and 8 ohm are the same thing, i looked at her and laughed. the sad thing was that she thought she was 100% correct. anyway i would take them back but they were christmas presents bought for me at the begining of december... i doubt i could do it and even if i could i'de only get best buy credit. (i would have never bought these but since they were gifts...)
thanks

I think he has them hooked up, he was just wondering what ohm load the amp was seeing. At 4 ohms, that JBL is not putting out its max power.
