JL Sub and JBL Amp

OK...i won't to know what ya'll think of this setup. I JBL 1200 watt amp and one JL w3. I want good sound with some bump but not ground pounding bass. I'm thinking of a single sub box setup with the amp mounted on top. What do ya'll think. Also, I'm going to post this question as another thread but, I would like any plans that anybody is willing to share on how to make a single sub box for my rear well of a Trans Am.

Thanks

That amp is way to big for that single sub.

Then what about the JL 600??? You'll never get that much constantly.

you don't want ground shattering bass but you want the 1200?
i think for the W3 the highest i'd go would be the JBL 600.1...

What kind of sound quality do you think that I will get from that set up. Whats your setup Andy? I noticed you have a JL avatar so i figure you have a good sound system.

The 600.1 is plenty for that sub. I am running two 12W3's off of it right now and it pounds. I am changing to a single 12 setup soon so I will be running about 700 watts into one W3. It is going to sound so nice The JBL 600.1 will put out about 700 watts RMS into a 2 ohm load. It can also run into 1 ohm loads because i ran mine at 1 ohm all summer long and i never had a problem.

What will the difference in sound be? With one W3 it will hit harder, i'm guessing. Sorry to sound so stupid. How can you change between 1,2,4 ohm loads? How accurate are your subs with that setup? Thanks in advance.

I'm actually running a JL 250 to two 10" subs in a custoo box. Sounds beautiful. You don't really want to run that much amperage through just one sub. I wanted to go the easy road on this one and it was a great investment. Definitely worth looking into. I would recommend it.

why is everyone always telling people that the amp is too big for the sub.

there is no such thing, you can always turn the amp DOWN, you just cant make the sub handle more power, but an amp that you have at say gain setting 2, will sound better, than the same power, coming from an amp that is maxed out.

if you want to keep away from distortion, get too big of an amp, and dont get heavy handed with the gain.

my setup is a pheonix 900.1 into two rockford he2's at 4 ohms, roughly 500rms, i have the amp halfway up, and i have no doubt that it wouldnt be as loud as the same subs with say a rockford 500 watt, even though it is still pushing the same power i am now, i am not running my amp nearly as hard, so i am nowhere near distortion.

if you ever plan on upgrading, get the 1200, money well spent. i NEVER regretted getting the amp i have.

What is ya'lls experience with the JBL 1200? Good amp...bad amp? Hows the sound quality, and does it live up to its specs? Thanks

Higher quality amps usually live up to those speccs, and many are even under-rated. That JBL1200.1 really puts out about 1350-1400 watts RMS.

It's true that you can turn down the gains on the amp but what's the point unless you plan on upgrading and want to stay with the same amp. An amp with more power than needed gives you "headroom". Its like having a blown 350 in your car when you only "need" to run a 15 second quarter mile. Its more than enough, but when you want more, you can do so. But, with the same analogy, if your tranny can only handle 250 hp, then it will break under the stress.

For a W3, a JBL600.1 will be more than enough (it actually puts out about 750 watts RMS)
