Stereo Upgrade Post #2 (head unit)
This one's a quicky. I already had the hard part done from my previous install.
Here's the wooden plate I made to mount my old head unit:

This is what it looked like with the plexi panel mounted:

and with the stock radio plate over the top of it:

The new JVC sticks out a little bit more, so when I get time I'm going to need to install a couple washers between the wood and the stock mounting flange to push the wood back approximately 3/16".
I didn't take pics of my trim ring as I was making it, but I hand cut it out of 1/8" ABS stock. I used my dremmel with a cutting disk to get it close, then finished shaping it with a hand file and sand paper. It took me close to 2 hours. It would have taken me 10 minutes if I would ever get around to buying a damn motor for my milling machine.
Anyway, here are a couple horribly over-exposed pics:

Once I move the radio back a little more it'll look better. It already looks much better in person than in these pics. One thing that I'm very happy about is that the JVC moves the face out before it tilts it, so it allows me to keep the trim ring MUCH tighter than I could do with my Kenwood.

hey jim, someone around here alerted me about a mounting kit that is flush for our cars (so i ordered one). its by scoche (can never get the name right) and i know sound domain's got it. mine should be in this week, so i'll let you know (we have the same deck). might save you and i some time, seeing as we both had the stealth/dummy face decks too.
Looks pretty damn cool, but all the same it doesnt quite look like the dummy plate is going to fit over your JVC now that it's installed...
Does your JVC flip the face around and providing a flush surface, and then you put the plate on?

detachable face guys.
Once I take the face off, the stock radio plate will fit just fine.
CAMp3RO, I've used those kits. There's one in my Vette. They're ok, but nothing half as clean as a custom plate.

yeah, well you look like you've got a bit more skill at cutting straight lines then i do, so i think this may be a step in right direction for me
great work by the way. i think i've seen you on carsound, right? i noticed you're using eq's. you see the thread(s) over there about the behringer 8024 and such? i'd love to get one of em. 100+ presets, dual 30 band, digital add on, built in rta, and more for under $200. one of my next purchases after my amp for my comps

Wow... that sounds like a lot of goodies for the money. Do you have a link?
I'm using a pair of 31 band Audio Control EQ's, but it's always good to learn about the new kid on the block.

Wow... I'm doing a little reading on that eq and so far I'm pretty damned impressed.
I'm already having visions of mounting it out back, with the controls & display relocated to the front of the car.

yeah, i wanted a dual 31 band for my car. i was originally gonna get the alesis model (dont know the exact number) but it was analong, one setting only. still, not bad for $100. then i started looking around and found the behringer. all i can say is wow. you wouldnt even need to mount controls up front if you got a laptop
. for under $300, that thing is a flat out steal. guessing the audiocontrols were around $200 each? i was gonna go that route too, but this thing is just spectacular. one of the next few pieces of gear that MUST go in my car. just think, a flat setting, an spl setting, a rock setting, jazz, etc...... i dont think i could ever fill the 100+ presets. but i'll sure try
