Power Antenna

Well, I just got home and shut the eng. off and the power antenna moter kept running. I was to tired to check it out so I just disconnected the batt. Went to the Archives and read what they had to say but are there any other suggestions. Can the P/A be removed and repaired? Can you buy a rebuilt? Is there a manuel antenna avaiable ect. ect?

gm has a rebuild kit. there is a relay under the dash on the passenger side. to find it, when you turn to the radio on or off it will click. then you will know where it is, to get it to stop running all the time, just unhook one of the leads going to it. the rebuild kit is somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-30 bucks.

Power Antenna

Hi.. I'm new here. I trust girls are allowed? I didn't intend on joining but since I found help in your forums it seemed only right that I should say thank you for the info. My p/a in my '89 RS still works. It doesn't continue to run, which appears to be the most common problem. Mine only goes half way up. (Not the best reception for weak channels) It retracts as it should. I was going to replace it with a manual one but since it is such a pain to get the cable in and out from under the dash I figured it's worth repairing if possible. I found the cable part still available at www.gmpartsdirect.com providing that is what I need. Now, if I can only get my boyfriend to take it apart .....yeah, he will.
Thanks again.,
Nancy

Power Antenna

I remember reading in prior posts where the GM parts book said there was no rebuild kit for late 80s models and I now understand why. It appears we got disposable Power Antennas because the case is rivetted shut. You can't get into it to replace the cable and/or the mast. So, I guess I will just run it half way up until it quits altogether. We tried putting a manual one in that I bought at Fry's and the cable wasn't long enough. Geez!

A/C

Hahaha Any excuse to get a picture of your car in here, eh?? It's beautiful! Mine is similar. Black, but no red. I'll post a picture of it as soon as I wash it. Now, if it's permissable, I have a question on a different topic. What do you do when your air conditioning runs out of freon? I understand the "old style" freon is no longer commercially available, but is it really necessary to convert to the new style? Or are there still folks out there who can service mine? BTW, I'm in the SF Bay Area in California.

Well, you are right. I have been, as you can see on this board for awaile and just learned how to post pics. Its funny you should ask about the A/C Nancy because my compressor just hatched this summer. I bought all the parts and had a shop install them and charge the system with 134a. Total cost was $315.54. I wish I would of done the conversion before the comp. hatched because it would have been $125 less. Driving down the freeway at 70 mph on a 85* day I get 40* out of the center vent.
