1985 Berlinetta...

Hey I'm 15 (I turn 16 in September) and I am pretty certain that I am buying a 1985 Camaro Berlinetta from my uncle for $1500. This car is MINT, fully loaded, 305, t-tops, red etc. It has 90,000 miles on it but its always been graged and never driven hard. I've been a hardcore 3rd gen fan ever since I saw a new 1992 Z28 (I was 5). OK anyways...I have a few questions about this car that I'm concerned about...

1) Whats the stock 1/4 and 0-60 times on an LG4? I don't want my dumbass friend in a Civic wasting me lol

2) I'm worried that this digital dash is gonna go out and its gonna be a nightmare to fix

3) Whats the best way to upgrade the audio? I hate that stupid swivel radio and the sound quality isnt too great, but it looks like it would be a really difficult job to convert it.

Thats all I can think of now I'll get back to you when I think of some more questions...IF I get the car (which would be next week or the week after) I'll have pics up ASAP

Thanks,
Matt

I got one of those

i have a 89 berlinetta also. upgrading audio is easy. If you pull the swivel radio out... very easy just unscrew every thing pretty self explanitory! and there is a brain under neath that pull it out also.. The peice behind the swivel radio is where the fun stuff takes place! try to find another one so when u sell the car u can put it back to origanal! but you simply go a little up from the curve in the plastic and measure your stereos cage ( what ever you choose) and u slide it in plug in the harness so on and so on.. Never had any problems with the dash some times it will glicth but no big problems. i can help with those to if they happen. as far as 1/4 probally 14 15s dont hold me to it hough

1. If you 1/4 mile times wind up anywhere in the 16s, you've got a good running LG4.

2. They seem to be somewhat reliable, but if it does tank you can get them for close to nothing on ebay.

3. I think somebody makes an adapter to mount a radio in the dash. I believe that others have modified a normal console to fit the berlinetta dash.

Also... there were no Berlinettas in 89. 86 was the last year for them.

As tested By Car & Driver in 1984 ( the 84 Berlinetta LG4 was rated at 150HP compared to the 155HP LG4 in 1985 )

305ci / Automatic / 3.08 gearing

0-60 --> 9.3 seconds.
Standing 1/4 mile --> 17 Seconds.

As far as the stereo,...... I retained the original deck in my Berlinetta and added a BOSE speaker system to it. Sounds awesome & looks stock (BOSE stuff is very rare though !) You can also buy an add-on (or "remote") mounting kit for a regular car to mount any aftermarket deck into the Berlinetta. Just turn the case upside down and mount it right on top of the center console. (no hacking original parts) try Best Buy for the kit.

The dash clusters can be found on E-Bay as Jim said - I have bought more than one from there,.... and most did NOT work. ( just a word from the wise ! ) If you ever need a replacement - be sure you buy one for a V8 or your tachometer will give you incorrect readings.

Good Luck !

Car and Driver preformed a road test on the 84 Berlinetta when the new "Digital Camaro" was introduced. I pulled that data from thier article published in the January Car & Driver Mag. They only tested 4 cards in that issue.

That swivel radio is worth keeping in there just for the "What the hell is that?" reaction you get out of everyone. Its easy to put in a different system and still keep the pod. Easily the best part of the Berlinetta package.
