Free air subs aren't going to sound as good or be as loud a subs in an enclosure. The up side is that all you need is a baffle board instead of a whole box, so you could have your system up and running in an hour.

I think the term free-air is a little misleading to some people. Free-air subs are supposed to be really hard to get to sound good but I do not have any really experience with them. The idea is that say you have a car with a trunk. A free-air sub, properly installed, will still have an enclosure, the trunk. The baffle board has to be air-tight or air will leak out and the sub will not sound good. The trunk is supposed to be seal, so in effect you will still have an enclosure, just a really big one, which means the sub will not be using the air inside of the box to assist in the suspension.
If you decide to just through a board over the back well and drop some subs in, they will not sound good, and I have tried this on my very first system, it sound terrible. If you a simple good sounding system I would recommend a sealed box.
Good luck either way.

A big plus is that you can use a baffle board (10 lbs) or something to that extent as oppossed to a sealed or bandpass box that weighs a ton.

If you build the baffle board correctly, they can sound good. But, remember that a box gives your setup a lot more integrity than just a board. My brother used to just have a free air setup in his 89. But after about 6 months, the weight of the subs cause the baffle board to begin to bow. The more it bowed, the more air leaked, the quieter it got. You will never be able to fully seal a free air setup, so you won't ever get the efficiency out of the subs that an enclosure will get you.

Actully the correct term you are looking for is infinite baffle which can sound very good with certain speakers but mostlikley not in a camaro. There are some people that run IB for sound quality using speakers like the ID MAX, but like I said not in a camaro.

I made my own sealed box and it is awsome.

I really like the 2 JBL 12's i got from crutchfield for only $150 for both. Hits soo hard shakes my tail lights out of place all the time.

here is a drawing of the box, i know horrible work but gets the idea across

Here is my current set up with the JBL's

Well if you check my sig now... i dotn really talk about it but i got like 5% tent on there. So only like 1% uv light hits them and liek only 25% radiant heat hits them, so they stay rather cool. LOL
Only thing though is the amp does get warm to the touch out in the full sun with the hatch sut, just that thermal dymanics thing again

The rear deck lid will cover most of it too, so it's a bit less visible. But I say, if you've got it, flaunt it

Another point I thought should be made is to make sure you use "free-air" speakers if you're going to use a baffle-board. I had an old factory MTX baffle board and it sounded o.k. I only had 75W/ch on the subs and I still eventually blew them. I replaced them with whatever Lanzar's best speaker was at the time. Yeah, those lasted about a week since they were designed for a sealed box. I then built a box and I only blew dash and sail panel speakers after that...
