Started my new audio system!

Well, I finally got my sheet of MDF and a nice day to work with it. I started working on building the speaker pods for the back of the car.

First I fiberglassed an extra set of sail panels that I had laying around. They still need more fiberglassing until they are strong enough but here is the start of them

Here are the speaker baffles for the 8" subs that will be mounted to the sail panels. They still need to be sanded to give them a smoother edge but I will do that later.

Here are a couple pics of how the baffle will be mounted to the sail panel.

More pics in the next post.

Here are a few pics of a sub in the baffle and how it will look in the car. The angle isnt right but I will get that figured out later.

Here is a pic from the side so you can see that it will fit in there nicely.

Once I get the other baffles done for the other speakers then I will get them mounted to the sail panel then fiberglassed together then sanded smooth and painted. I think they will look great in the car once I am done.

You said you did this for 6.5's? Can you just glass up the stock baffle and seal the holes with fiberglass mat. Then poly fill it? Is it a huge difference? I already made an adapter for the component set. Need to figure out how to get some tightness in bass back there, without a huge sub box.

For the 6.5s I have it made a big diff but its very dependant on the drivers. Mine were kickers which are not very good free air. You could glass the baffle thats there but it would take alot of resin. If this is your first glass project make sure you take your time, it took me 3 tries to make em fit.

Gambit are you using those 8s as the main subs in your system or are they functioning more as midbass?

They are going to be mainly for mid-bass. I am planning on building up a fiberglass box for 2 15's in the back for the heavy hitting. I might have a switch to turn the amp on and off for the 15's so they are not running all the time. But for most part the 8's are just mid-bass.

the swich for the amp is easy to do...just put it in the remote wire and you're done

as for using those as midbass...generally people buy dedicated midbass drivers for that because they're designed to play those particular notes. However you already have these and it wont be that big of a deal if they're real subwoofers, just make sure you have them crossed over correctly between your subs and mids or you'll get a whole lot of cancellation

I have used these 8's as mids before. I had them in my last car and just moving them into this one. I had 9 15's in the back of my other car and used the 8's as mids in my doors. Everything worked out just fine. I dont think I will have any trouble with cancellation.
Also, I do know how to put the switch in for the subs and I do appreciate you letting me know how to do it. I use to work in a car audio shop so I do know my way around a car audio system. Thanks for the help though. Any and all help is appreciated.
