6x9 in sail panel fitment issue

I have acquired a pair of Boston 6x9" 3-way speakers to replace my factory set. I noticed on the new speakers that the tweeter and mid-range speaker in the center of the woofer are raised up about 1/4 to 3/8 inch above the mounting surface of the main speaker. Will there be a problem with interference with the sail pannel from this raised area when they are installed?

Also, a quick question - how will I know which wire is positive and which is negative on the factory wiring?

You shouldn't have fitment issues... I don't think so at least. My formula came with MTX 6x9's installed in it when I bought it used. For the wires the best way I can think of is check it with a voltimeter. Which ever wire puts out the juice is the power. If you pick the ground you won't get any power at all cause - and - gives you nothing.

well not true
since speakers work off of sine waves
which is ac
it switches power and ground @ the freq needed to make the speaker reproduce the right signal

so one will never show constant power like ur thinking

but on the other hand you can get in behind your unit and connect a small 9v or similar battery to the wires
one on each side of the bat
when the speaker moves outward
then whatever wire is on the + side of the battery is the true +
good luck buddy

Hey guys - thanks for the advice - shouldn't be too hard to figure out which wire is which.

BUT what about the clearance thing, clarence? Will the mid and tweeter sticking out above the main speaker mounting surface be a big problem?

It might. I know mine sticks out. I am trying to figure out how to build a box that will fit inside that space. I knowsomeone on here has done it and that is where I got the idea. My advice is to put one in to see if there is a problem. If there is figure out how to correct it by either placing the speaker farther back or something like that. I have also seen people cut out that section on the sailpanels and place a speaker cover there.

i have pioneer 3 way 6X9's and they touch the sail panel, but i doesn't hurt anything. mine have a guard type thing on them so it is not actually touching the tweeter. and also on the positive, i'm not an expert but i have installed a lot of speakers, and i have never been able to tell any difference. what i am saying is i have hooked them up and listened and then switched the wiring and listened and not been able to tell any difference. im sure that there is a difference, just not that I can here.

Well, some poeple simply can't hear the difference between in-phase, and out of phase audio. I know what the difference is, but sometimes I can't tell.

Just mount it and see. Just fit the sail panel over it carfully. You should be able to tell if it's going to rub
