New to subs so help me out
I want something to supplement my audio. I dont want anything overboard... i just want something to be very light and complement the double bass. I listen to metal so i want to hear the trebile and the vocals. I just want something to hit the double bass drums. I was thinking one 10" or something to that effect. I dont know about brands (i dont want to spend a lot) and i dont know about amps or any of that good stuff. I have a pioneer head unit. So any help and suggestions on what to buy would be awesome. Thanks.

checkout elemental designs..great subs at great prices...depending on what you can afford, and what you can afford to power it with.
I would recommend considering the O series from the information youve provided

Since you not looking to spend a lot look into a Alpine Type R or others around that price range. Go listen to a few subs a see what you like.

I listen to tons of metal on my setup (Dimmu, Cradle of Filth, Chimaira, etc.) and it sounds amazing with the double bass.
The smaller the sub you have you will get a better sound for what you want I believe. If you want big distorted bass you go with 12"s 15"s etc (I'm talking for the $ here) That is great for techno or rap, but for metal you need something more tuned since the double bass is so fast.
A nice 10" in a good box will be more than enough for you I think. Here is a quite decent setup:
JL Audio W0 8" sub (75 watt continuous power handling) ~$50
MTX Thunder311D (155 watt mono amp) $230
That's what I have in my girlfriend's Z-24 now (after I realized that Rockford Fosgate kinds sucks
) and it sounds perfect for most music, nice and tight sounding bass.

Size has nothing to do with distortion a 12 would sound nice a 15 is a little large for a 3rd gen. The enclosure should be a closed box for rock music though. The closed box has a smooth low frequence roll off that will compliment a bass drum. It will give you a nice punch, clean and tight bass. If you are using one make sure to get decent power (150watt+ amp) or a dual voice coil sub. You will be happy with either a 10 or 12. Don't waste your time with 8's they will get drowned out.

it matters on the brand of sub you buy more so then the size. You could have 2 15" subs or 2 12's, if they are from a crappy maker they are gonna sound like crap.

Right, but anyone who knows anything about sound dynamics knows that you get a much nicer and tighter bass sound from smaller subs. That's why most of the sub installs we do at Tweeter are JL W0's and such, 8" and 10" subs mostly. Much nicer sound, cheaper to buy, and cheaper to power.

Do some search on the "Alpine, type Rs" I almost didnt want them because of the name lol Type R lol umm ok so search about them. The 12 I know is $109.00 each and has some insane high watt for the price like 800w max or 1200, something, I forget, maybe 800rms and 1200 max... o.O SOmeone help here? But others say that you can beat those speakers bad and they still hold up and cleanly. So this is a good thing for you, even though you may not be putting constant highwatt power into them, if they can handle it, I would imagine that they would sound pretty clean for some bass drums and bass guitar. I put two 10" JBLs in my car for that and OMG! lol Sounds nice on those bass drums. I recomend testing out this band for some good rock bass notes www.scarsoflife.com

I belive closed is the same as sealed. Should just mean that there are no port holes in the box. But... if I start thinking about that to long I'll confuse myself thinking about some designs made by bose where they do put the speakers inside the box. hmmm.... does that mean those boxes that they do that on with home stereo are... home stereo bandpass boxes in a sence? What ever its technically called, it sounds great

Its cool man....
If you are new you should read the first part of this artical..it also explains sealed and bandpass and ported boxes alittle.

My vote is a get a nice mdf box made for your trunk hole and put 2 10's in there.....run a power wire from your batt to a 300watt or higher amp.
you should beable to spend around 200 for subs and bepending on if your amp is new or used around 200 too on a good budget.
I have 2 12s i kind of wish i went and spent the extra $ on nicer 10s sometimes but oh well..they do sound nice its just theyd sound better if my box was a tad bigger but i do listen to rap as well as metal and rock so its a good compromise. With the 12s i like the low beeeeep bass so at 1st was runing a 275w amp to them but that didnt deliver enoght guts to make them go so i poped for a 600w amp. But for 10s and just litening to metal 300w is totaly adiquite to start.

Closed and Sealed are the same thing. There are different advantages/tradeoffs between sealed and ported such as low end response, SPL and frequency response linerity. Sealed are the best for first timers because if you are off a little bit in volume it won't make much difference.
