Is this possible with a sub box?

What im tryin to say is can i build a sealed box w/ ports incase i want to seal up the ports i can. If this sounds crazy or anything let me know. But some songs sound better w/ a ported box and vice versa with a sealed box. I want to also gonna put a divider in it. so u guys let me know bout it and if u have any suggestions/pics i would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Kyle

i just mean it's possible to do...sorry for the confusion...but i think you'd get tired of installing and removing port blocks all the time as you would have to put them inside the box to ensure a good seal you would have to remove the sub to install/remove them

hehe j\k.. well what you can do is go to home depot or an arts and crafts store and get a plug made of ummm rubber would be the best. Just get a rubber plug and posiible some other hardware so that you can kinda like push it down into the hole, and twist it so that it locks into place. Have like some flat peice of something on the top of the plug and two catches bolted onto the box. This way the bass wont shoot the cap out lol. If you cant find that kinda plug, Use the circular peice of wood that you cut out of the box and just buy some rubber strips to put around it, look in the weather stripping isle for windows at your hardware store or home depot.

Make it look nice, cut out a circle peice of covering that your using to cover the box with and glue it ontop of the plug.

So... want to know what I would do? I would try to find some gears somewhere and I would get a motor so and a flip switch from radio shack. This way I could rig up some kinda mechanical deal that would raise and lower the plug so that I can open and close the ports from the driver seat. Where to find strong motors for cheap? Well.. go to a junk yard and pick them out of Firebird/Trans am headlights. The motor is the one with the cap on the top that you can rotate with your hands. Oooorrr... Alot of These thirdgens came with electric pull down hatches. Those motors are pretty strong and I'm sure they will let you have it for somewhere around 5 bucks.

hmmm this gives me Ideas... I can have a switch controlling a motorized vent for the power bulge hood. And This one I've been thinkin about for awhile, the vinal cover for my hatch, I want it to remotly roll and unroll. This way I can unroll it and show off my system while driving, and when I park I can roll it back out to cover it for parking. Then a motorized arm that will GRAB THE PERSON WHO IS TOUCHING MY CAR AND RIP OFF THAT ARM AND BEAT THEM WITH IT!!!! >.> I'm ok.... you see.. yoooour the crazy one.. not me lol

man, i think one thing that you are not considering is that the box size for an appropriately sized sealed box and an appropriately size ported box will be quite different.

have you ever heard the saying, "jack of all trades, master of none?"
if this was a logical/effective, more people would do it.

make up your mind and build it, anything other than that and you are pissing into the wind.

tune low and you should have decent SQ. Keep in mind you box is going to be big if you are going ported.

lol OMG! I was pissin in the wind the other day.. and its really picking up here, you know because your in dallas lol **** ALL OVER MY PANTS!!! Right on this job interview... lol Funny thing was, the dude I interviewed with had just done the same thing so I got the JOB! ok you can stop beliving what I'm saying about now.. aannyyywaaazz...

Your right about the port/seal thing.. BUT! What would it actually sound like when you pull the plug? Would the tone actually change to the kinda music your listening to? Like... you wanted tighter bass for short clean drum kicks, and then you want long drawn out bass lines that didnt have to be so tight? or.. maybe you think to hard for your own good and your just like me? lol umm ok so.. yea.

I think I want to try the port/seal thing on my box now because I'm really not sure bout them. They are JBLs that came in a ported truck box with low volume space. I put them in this huge custom non seperated box, sealed, and they sound better. So... I guess you cant really tell untill you just try it yourself *srugs*

put two decent (HE2,W3,Thunder8000,Aluminum,etc) in a sealed box, of MODERATE volume, approximatley 1.2ish after the subs displacement, and feed them the recommended RMS power,

and you will NOT feel the need to have a ported box,

for example my HE2's in a sealed box, with about 600rms going to them, would play nice and loud sub-40hz.

if you dont know what you are doing,(and no offense, but it sounds like you dont) you are MUCH more likely to damage something with a ported box.

when you use a ported box, say, tuned to 35hz, you will get approximately 3db of gain at that frequency, however, below that frequency, the subs will flutter and blow, if you have any power going to them, and above that frequency, say 90hz, your music will sound flat.

IMO, a sealed box and more power, is normally a better solution than some goofy *** box arrangement, and for the novice, it is ALMOST ALWAYS a better solution.

There have been boxes in the past that do like you want.... the kicker tube boxes come to mind. The problem is, most subs require a ported box that's quite a bit different in size than a sealed box, so if you just plug up those holes later on, the "sealed" box will be the wrong size. Likewise, if you build it to the proper sealed size, it'll be the wrong size when you port it.

I'd pick one or the other.

In many cases, I have found the general difference between ported and sealed boxes is that ported boxes tend to be louder, especially at the freq they are tuned to, while sealed boxes generally are better at accurate bass seeing as they are not tuned to a specific frequency.

It honestly will be hard to make an enclosure that will pound on every kind of music you listen to. I have found that if you go with the middle of the road goal, and just make that middle really big (so to speak) generally you will get the best all round response from any song.

There is a good point that was also made regarding enclosure size. Usually ported is larger than sealed.

My humble suggestion to you is get a sub that has the widest range of frequencies it is rated to respond to, find out what the specs are for a sealed box and make a box to spec. Use 3/4 inch MDF board, ensure its sealed and so on. If the box size is smaller than spec due to location restrictions, insulating the box with insulation or some kind of cotton filler will usually fool the sub into thinking it has that little bit more air space to work with.

I hope my two cents helps.. or even makes sence
