Capacitors... Help??

Transmission: Re-built 700-R4
Axle/Gears: Moser, 3.73
Capacitors... Help??
I have 2 10" MTX Thunder8000 subwoofers powered by a MTX 540D 800 watt amp... what would be a good cap to add to this setup?
Can someone first explain to me the concept of a capacitor. I want to learn what they are for and how they work and what options they come with, basically anything and everything you can tell me so i know what i'm doing when i go out to look for one to buy. Thanks a bunch.

check your voltage at the amp with a multimeter, if you dont have much variation, then you dont need a capacitor. more than likely, larger power wire/a better battery will help.
also, you might try, giving the battery a better ground, and giving the alternator at least 8gauge if not 4 gauge ground/power leads.
it is cheap, so if it helps, its worth it.

Would that keep the lights from dimming though.. I'm just being picky here bc i have to crank the hell out of my system before it starts dimming the lights even a tiny bit, and even when they DO dim its way to loud for anyone to listen and too much bass for a comfortable ride.

How wouldn't getting a cap still make the subs response noticably better? how would those other suggestions you gave me make that much of a difference?

upgrading your wires under the hood will eliminate the bottleneck affect with your current flow...in other words it will eliminate weak links in your electrical system so that you have less voltage drop. With higher voltage to your amp, it will put out more power and cleaner power making your system sound better.
A cap is basically a small battery that discharges very quickly. It stores power until it needs to be used by the stereo. The only problem is your alternator has to charge the cap over and over again aswell as everything else in your car making its job harder and limited its life. So if you skip the middleman and just get a higher output alt that will provide enough juice for everything in your car you wont need a cap
