New system installed... kind of!
New system installed... kind of!
Hey everyone, what's up?
I had christmas with my dad already and so i got subs for my car. More specifically i got two FUBR 12" 1800 watt subs, a 2400 watt max amp, and a 4 guage install kit. Everything is power acoustik. This is my first system and unfortunately it's going in the grand am. I bought a sealed box from a local audio shop(Advance Audio for those in wichita?). My first question is if the box is sealed airtight. It doesn't look caulked from the inside so i was wondering if i should caulk it up with some silicone sealer? My second question had to do with the subs. I wired everything up and just set the two subs in the box. I wired the first one down to 1 ohm and turned a bass cd on. Th bass sounded good in the car, but when i went to the trunk i heard a rattling coming from the sub. It's 1800 max and the amp puts out 1800 at 1 ohm, so i rewired it to 4 ohms to see if that helped. It did the same thing. The noise sounds like something rattling. I hooked the other sub up and there was no noise. I then hooked them both up in parralel. I wanted to see if the amp could handle 1/2 ohm. The same thing happened. One sub sounded good, the other had that rattling(same sub rattled) They aren't screwed down, because i don't know how i'll end up wiring them. So i guess I'm asking: 1st, what could this rattling noise be from? and 2nd should i wire them in series at 2ohms or parralel at 1/2? Sorr for the long post and thanks for the advice guys.
Merry christmas and a happy new year,
Jared (84'fxrupr)
p.s. the subs are 2ohm DVC, in case that helps.

you never wire two speakers in series. voice coils you can but not separat speakers.

here ya are:

Please note that when wiring multiple drivers, whether DVC drivers or their SVC brethren, it is recommended that series connections between drivers be avoided at all costs. This does not include series connections made between voice coils on the same driver.

hmm, ive wired subs like that before. The system had 4 12 inch 2 ohm subs. The guy had an amp that "said" it was 1000 watts rms into 4 ohms 500 watts per channel into 4 ohms rms
(yeah right) But it wasnt 2 ohm stable so i wired two subs per channel in a series so the amp saw a 4 ohm load. 84 you probably crapped the voice coil on one of the subs out by putting max power or more (you said the amp was 2400 watts and 1800 watts?) through the sub with a bass cd of all things without even having it screwed into a box! Also if Boxes you bought are the cheap thin particle board like the auto zone here sells they wont last with high powered subs. Try taking the sub back and telling them its defective maybe they'll replacce it.

Hey brobert. The amp is 2400 max. It basically runs 1800 under 2 0hms. The wiring chart that came with the subs has 1 for series, and the other for parralel. One works at 2 ohms, the other at 1/2. The broken sub still plays, it sounds great from in the car. But when you go out back, i can hear a rattling like its hitting something. I didn't screw them down because i wasn't sure the amp would take the 1/2 ohm load. The box is from a top audio place here. They had a christmas sale for $80. They sell alpine, eclipse, diamond, memphis, and a few others, so they are definately a quality store. I haven't cranked the subs yet because i know they have to break in. The bass test cd is not the best( burned) but it does give a range of bass tones. The problem is that My dad bought this stuff through company his dad works with. To get the year warrenty i have to have an authorized dealer sign the cards. The only dealer i've found won't sign the card if its in a sealed box. He wants to build me a custom ported encloser that i cant afford and then he'll sign the card. After tht i then have to ship it back and forth. I want to know if there is any way to avoid this.
Thanks for the help guys and sorry for the long post, oh yeah, merry christmas and happy new year

if your sub is wrecked you can jus contact power acoustic directly and send them your sub and chances are they will fix it for free no matter what box it was in. im not sure how good their customer service is though

good luck 84 . merry xmas to all . lol
Awesome, I've never seen anyone on here from kansas. I live in andover. It's a little bit east of wichita.
As far as sending the sub back, that's what i figured. I just wanted to see if there was anything i could fix to get it to work so i would'nt have to. That's okay though, the 1 sub plays loud enough now. I'd rather be working on the camaro so i probably wont go and find out where all the rattling comes from!
Thanks for all the help
