Better fitting head unit
Better fitting head unit
Is there a better fitting head unit I could get for my '90 RS besides the normal ones?
The previous owner put in a crappy unit about 10 years ago, and I replaced it 3 years ago with a fair Kenwood model. It was fine for me back then, but recently, I am a little dissapointed. Everything works fine, but I just don't like the way it is mounted.
It looks like this only with a different unit inside. Is there a type of head uit that doesn't use the proturduding plastic peices and push the unit forward? I would like somehting that is recessed about as much as the HVAC controls and looks closer to stock.
Anyone know what I mean?

get a DIN adapter ment for a chevy TRUCK... they're flat.. like the upper HVAC controls...
if you look until you find one that matches the black grain plastic (not hard) then it will sit back and look semi stock..
get a head unit that doesnt look like somthing out of star trek if you want it to look more stock.
be aware that you may have to remove the rear cross brace in the console for it to fit though..... no biggie though.

another option is the Pioneer DEH-P77dh Head Unit.. full 1.5 Din.
I've also seen the Alpine 1.5din it looks just as good.. and I'm sure performance is just the same. If you want to make the single Din head unit fit.. your best bet is to move it up higher, and you will need to modify the heater ducts for the console. because those decks will hit it..

most aftermarket decks are the same depth as yours. The reason your deck protrudes so far out is because of the heater air vents on the sides of your center consolethe run right behind your deck and prevent you from recessing your deck any further. I had the same problem. My deck sticks out just as far as yours and barley made it at that!! I hate it just as much as you do. The only option you would have is to either go back to a stock deck or modify those heater vents. I plan on modifying my heater vents. Lets face it aftermarket decks are far better than stock.

I modified my heater vents.. it was very easy.. get a hold of a decent heat gun.. old it in the area you want to modifiy.. but not to close.. then useing something made of metal with a good corner longer than one inch in both directions, press it into the plastic. it worked great for me.. I made perfect corners into the plastic.. and it really didn't loose much air flow either. not my head unit sits much farther into the dash.
The Pic I used I borrowed from aaron7 in the "have something to prove" thread. My head unit looks much more subtle, it isn't bad at all.
The main thing I wanted is the fit. There is a lot of area in there and I want it to be used, sticking out like it is just looks weird to me.
Those in the 1.5 din thread are the size I want. That is what I think would look good. I am guessing that 1.5 din represnts the height of the head unit? If so, I should find a 1.5 din unit to my liking and modify the heater ducks to make it fit properly? Well, guess I'll start checking it out. Thanks.

1 DIN is the height of a "standard" radio now days..
1.5 that is the GM size.....
most aftermarket radios are 1 din... thats why they have the conversion kits..
if you notice you HVAC controls are flat, with a border in the flat area, and then the radio around it.
if you have a 1 din radio and a flat adapter, you can have it look similar.... athough having it that far back MAY present a problem with the heater ducts behind it.
if you get a 1.5 din radio that is ment for GMs, then you shouldnt have to modify any ducts and it will take the whole space...
athough the styling of every 1.5 ive seen is... umm.... not understated to be nice...
most use oversize glowing buttons, big numbers, ect to fill the extra space...

Here's a shot of my Pioneer DEH-P47DH CD player. Its the GM size unit and fit beautifully. I had it in place in about 30mins myself. Got it through Crutchfeild for $249 + free shipping and free connection harness for my specific vehicle. What an effortless installation.
Nice & an attractive alternative!
Thanks for the pic.
I've used Crutchfield often myself. They do have very good options & even better customer service & really stand behind what they sell.
I know as I've returned radios to then without very much of a discussion & then a new "same model" appears a day or three later on.
I enjoy supporting/recommending crutchfield, as they've been good to me as a customer.
For the money yes crutchfield does give away alot of stuff to make the installation seamless.
