280wRMS Amp too much for 250wRMS Sub?
Hi everyone, well like the title says, will a 250 watt RMS sub handle 280 watts from an amp? thanks for any help!

A lot comes into play. What final ohm the amp is running at... What's the max the maker of the subs recommends for peak. What type of box sealed or ported...
Normally though 30 watts more isn't going to do anything... you'll probably even loose some depending on the power the amp is actually recieving and the resistance through the wire.
I'm powering my subs at 1300+ watts and RMS was 1000 watts on them (sealed box).

hey thanks for the quick response!
heres the sub:

well, it will be at 4ohms, the max power for the sub is 500watts peak, and it will be in a sealed box

That's a dual 4 ohm sub. You could wire it down to a 2 ohm final for the amp. That just really depends on what amp you pick.
Here's a neat site http://jlaudio.com/tutorials/wiring/index.html

you amp puts out 280@4ohms but is not stable down to 2 ohms
so you have a bit of a problem...you could either find a new amp, or try to run this amp at 2 ohms and risk blowing it.
i know some of the mtx thunder amps will run under their rated impedence levels but not sure about that particular one

the only problem is the lower your impedence load (ohms) the more power your amp will generally put out. So if your amp puts out 280@4ohms running it at 8 ohms will probably give you about 140 watts.
Similarly running it at 2 ohms could give you over 500 watts but it wont be as stable.
Amps are rated at a minimum impedence level, there arent any max impedence levels that would hurt the amp. You could run it at 128 ohms if you wanted but you would be getting very little wattage.
Im not sure of the technial stuff that goes on in an amp for it to be 2 ohm stable rather than 4 ohm stable though
