Grommet
Hey everyone,
I looked all over the electronics and car audio thread, but could not find an answer to this question. Granted, it's a really stupid one, and everyone probably knows the answer, but I don't.
Where is the Grommet on the firewall so I can run my amp power wire through that, and not have to go through the door? please answer, I'm at a loss. It doesn't even say in my manual!
Thanks

Standing on the passenger side of your car, hood open, looking at the firewall on the passenger side.
There is the fan housing, under that should be a cork shaped bump that is the same color as the engine compartment, which seems to flake off if you stab it with a screw driver, or a long fingernail. Like a pencil erasure.
That will be it.
Just push it out from the inside.
Or from the outside, you can stab a coat hanger, or an all through it, then look for it on the inside.
You might find yourself removing a little precut circular section of the fiber insulation to get at the hole from inside the car.
stab.. stab... STAB!!!
MWAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!

Nelsm, I hope you were joking about the door... if you can't find that grommet (and I actually don't think I've ever seen it... odd, and I've had that heater box off before!), drill a new hole thru the firewall. Drill from the inside of the car towards the engine, and use things on the firewall as guides.
And there might even be a plug on the driver's side of the firewall that you can knock out with a punch; my car had one. Of course I found it -after- I had drilled a few holes over the years

no, i would never route a power wire through the door, what i meant to say (i guess i worded it wrong) is that I can't find the hole, but I won't go through the door.

When I was installing my bud's stereo in his 91 RS, we looked for the longest time for the little rubbery plug.
We finally found it in the location I previously described. It was painted the same color as the car, and it kinda hid under the casing for the fan in the shadows.
We had to enlarge the hole a bit to fit the 4guage wire through.
Then we sealed up around the wire with automotive adhesive goop.

Another trick I've used is the huge boot that the antenna goes through.
I ran the wire down along the pass side fender through the rubber doo-hicky (that’s the technical word
) just behind the kick panel.
Don’t run it through the same hole as the antenna. It’s kind of hard to explain, but it’s like a circle inside a circle, and there’s a groove in the doo-hicky. That’s what I went through.

I've installed a stereo in all 4 of my thirdgens, along with in a few friends cars. I still haven't found a good grommet to run anything bigger than 10AWG through. If it's bigger than that, drill your own hole and make sure you install a grommet.
