it depends is it sitting on the box, or just in the back.
If it is covering the speakers it could muffle the sound.
but other wise as long as your trunk is not full of stuff to the top of the car, you should not have any problems.

I wouldnt think it would hurt any thing or affect the sound but just using a board for your subs (are they free air subs?) that would affect your sound. Look into a sealed enlcosure for a tighter bass sound. As long as the wood you using is mdf I would just ad on to it.

If you use that top board and build a box below it just to the first little ledges, that would make a huge difference in sound...plus you would still have the lower well portion to store things...kinda a pain to get to it but its still storage.

I wouldn't worry about stuff underneath it. Plates sound so bad that a little crap behind the subs won't change a thing.

Free air or infinite baffel enclosures are not very popular, since most subs don't sound as good as they could had they been installed in a correctly built sealed or ported box.

However, if you are happy with the sound you have, then I would let things be.

If you want to explore other types of sound you can get from those subs, then try them in a sealed box, or in a ported box.

Speaking of free air subs, the best ones I've listened to as far as SQ, and alot of SPL, were some orions backed up by orion amps, sounded really sweet, and were punchy, and in the back of a 34 custom hot rod, woofers were mounted parallel to the chassis, so they fired towards the back of the seats, but there was plenty of room in front of them. They weren't bad at all, but I wouldn't use free air subs for anything. Maybe those new dayton IB series ones for a house, but thats about it.

Well, free air subs wouldn't help a plate setup, a plate is kinda like having a leaky regular box, that is very weak to boot (the plastic flexing).
