help on designing sub box plz
hey guys, this is a lil far out but I have alot of dedication and would like to c this idea go through. I put racing seats in my 84 camaro and figured id take the backseats out since they really didnt look all that good with the new seats. My idea is to take a sheet of MDF and use that as a base to fit across the back. I have an infinity perfect 12 and was wondering if i could make a box to fit in the back and take the 6x9's out of the sidewalls and place them on each side of the sub. I was told that it would be foolish to place a sub in the backseat area of my car but i was wonderin if u guys had any ideas since id rather save my space in the trunk. Any feedback would be helpful, thanx guys!

well you will lose a lot of your cabin gain with your sub right behind the front seat facing forward. anything can be done its just your imagination that holds you back

what boomin said!
Do you have your sub in a box now? If you do put it in the rear of the car as far back as you can, listen to some music, ok now take the sub and put it on the back seat facing forward and listen to the differnce!
IF you are set on Making this back seat box you could angle your sub facing slightly towards the back of the car and put your amp(s) on the front of the box flush mounted.
BTW i wouldnt put the 6x9's next to the sub. I've seen installs like tha and it always looks dumb as hell.

Ok, I have my a pretty large sub box..and I just have it sitting in the back seat, it takes up nearly both. Am I loosing sound quality by doing that? Would it sound better if I moved it toward the back?

give it a try and see how you like it. Generaly you get better bass responce with the subs in the back because it reflects off the hatch . Move the box in the back and see how you like it.

It sounds like you want to keep the box that you have right now and sort of place it on the MDF where the back seats are?
In any case, if the box doesn't fit in the rear hatch and you want to take the seats out, you'll want to consider building a custom box to put the subs in. The trans tunnel will make things awkward with the seats out, so you'd want to build around it if you want to stay with the rear seats idea. At this point, you can go with a simple box setup or go with a full wall like Boomin Boy said.
Do you have a picture of what you have now?

Sub Box for Rear Seats
Hi Guys, I'm an Aussie with an 86 Trans Am, It will soon be probably the loudest F-Body In the country. my stereo consists of 4 x 12" & 2 x 15" Sony P5 Subs.
I have created a custom box to replace the rear seats, the box has a 15" sub on either side, they are facing up with a 4" port facing into the back of the seats. there is a 12" sub in the middle of this box facing forward between the front seats, & there is a port facing up between the two 15"s.
I have some pics of the box when i was making it, i will post them up when i get them back.
as for the sound, the 2 x 15"s when going by them selves are pretty damn loud, with them facing up the bass goes into the rear section of the car, reverbs then comes straight back up to the front. very nice

Hey Guys, Wanted to let you know i got that Box Done this weekend. I don't have any pics yet (i don't have a digital camera or scanner), but going to get some soon.
Ended up facing the subs up, as the 12" diameter was just too big to face forward. It took my entire weekend to get it right, as there was alot of 'shaving' to get it to fit Just right.
I Think i'm going to try it again as soon as i get some high performance subs and amp, but right now it's pushing some really great sound and vibrating the seats even w/ the top down.
I have to look up the specs to see if i need to port the boxes (each sub has a little over a foot of cubic space), but i'm not getting very good low bass, The mid bass range is damn loud, but i can barely hear the deep deep stuff (near sub-sonic stuff), I'm hoping it's just crappy subs, but it might be the box design. Anyone got any ideas on how to help me out on that?

you'll probably want more subs though, although ive done a wall with a single 10 before
