CD player not working..need help please
First off this is in my 1990 Formula.
I just got the car and it came witha really crappy Koss radio, so I decided to use the brand new Alpine 9821 that I had in my 90 RS. The cd player was working fine in the Camaro.
I also had to use the radio connectors out of the RS since the ones in the Formula were missing.
I spliced the new connectors on and installed the deck, but it wouldnt work if the lights were on, so i checked all my connections and realized that I had swapped 2 wires(black and brown) I fixed that, but now the deck isnt powering up.
I grabbed the stock radio from the RS and plugged that in. I get static coming from all 4 speakers, but no reception. If I put a cassette in, I can hear the music but theres still a lot of static. This tells me that the radio is getting power, right?
If anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate the help, since driving around in silence really sucks.
BTW-on a different thirgen i had, the rear speakers were blown, which wouldnt allow the deck to get power, could something similar be going on here?

well take your deck out of your car and take the red and yellow wire and touch them to your pos. on the batt then take the black(ground) and touch that to your neg. and push the power button and see if it powers up. that will kinda help figure out the problem so you know if its your car wiring or your deck.
First thing i would recommend is if you have your ground hooked up to the stock harness in the car get it off of there and find a good dedicated ground spot. Once your sure that you have a good ground if it doesnt work there are 2 suggestions i have 4 u.
No scratch that, First thing u need to do is check all fuses for the deck. Since the stock radio works i would assume the one in the fusebox is fine
1. if you have a voltmeter even a cheap one doesnt matter use it to test all the wires coming out of the factory harness for power. Check em once with the key off to find your source of constant power (red from the deck i believe but alpines usually say right ont deck or in the paperwork , and once with the key turned back to find your source of switched power(shold be yellow from the deck).
2a. run dedicated wiring from the dashbox. I believe the one you wanna use for constant power says Batt, or somethin to that effect on it. And there should be one that says Ign or some abbreviation of ignition. That can be used for switched power. Once again a voltmeter is a handy tool to have but not necessary.
2b. run both your switched and constant power off the battery spot on the fusebox (should be red and yellow wires) this way you can turn your stereo on whenever you want regardless of key being in the ignition or not. It can be nice, but then you always have to remember to turn it manually.
As for your static problem sounds like either the speakers are crap, or you may possibly have wires tuching back there somewhere. Make sure there is no visible wire anywhere that can touch other wires our ground out. If that happens you will get lots of bad cracklin and popin sounds.
Hope that helps some....if u have any more troubles let me know ill see if i can help.
