Power antenna installed
I finally got an OEM replacement power antenna today. I got one from gmpartsdirect.com for about $103 shipped. The local dealer wanted about $205 for the same antenna. Tonight I installed it along with the Alpine that I had pulled out. The antenna goes down when you plop a CD in the deck and back up when you eject the CD as long as it switches to am or fm. Pretty cool. Looks like I'll be calling Sanyo to RMA this POS Sanyo deck, it distorts badly before it gets close to loud on the oem speakers. The Alpine cranks loud with no distortion.

Metra sells a pretty wide range of fully automatic power antennas that come with the base plates and locking nuts that match most oem installations. I don't have the price list on hand, but I can tell you it wouldn't be close to $103.just as reference for the future.

Have you tried the Metra antennas ? I did and it would not fit up in the fender area. Plus I am restoring the car and OEM parts are my best bet.

its cool, but not a very big deal at all. most decks now have a dedicated ANTENNA output that does just this. only powers on when the radio is activated - anytime you move away from the tuner (to cd, changer or off) it powers down.

I just replaced the mast in a mitsubishi power antenna today.
The new unit would have been $245 from Mitsubishi, the mast was only $32 (still a rip-off)
I had to undo the cover and remove the old broken plastic chain pieces. I re-greased the gears and fed the new mast in while a friend turned the key on and off, it was easier to just hook it up to the car instead of bench powering it.
I'm much happier with keeping it original, I've heard aftermarkets can fit well and often work better, but $32 isn't bad.
Does GM sell the 'rebuild kit' for power antennas?
Another tip I've heard was to apply some white lithium grease lightly with a rag while the antenna is up, this keeps it from binding and breaking itself.
