Deal or quality?
On eBay there are hundreds of 6.5" and 7" LCDs. I haven't ventured into that area yet, so I don't know what to say except that you might want to buy one or two different brands (one guy selling Phoenix Digital LCDs claims that PD makes the screens for Alpine, but who knows) and then compare them to an Alpine/Sony LCD that a shop or friend has to see if there is any difference in the quality/brightness. If the one(s) you bought sucks, then so be it. Sell it on eBay for half the price you paid for it and learn that maybe there is a difference. If it's good, then you've found out that you don't have to spend $700 for a good quality 7" LCD.
I was thinking of getting a used 15" Apple G4 laptop (very thin) and disassembling it, put the motherboard and drive somewhere, and then mounting the screen somewhere. Somewhere is the big deal, but I have some ideas. It would be awesome to have a big screen, plus you have the DVD player and computer built in for GPS navigation. It'd just require you to extend the ribbon cable to the LCD, and mount the motherboard in a protected place out of the way, then extend the DVD drive cable and flush mount the drive (slot loading) to a part of the center console. Plus fabbing up the LCD mounts/case, fabbing up a place for the motherboard to hide, fabbing a custom console, etc. But hey, a 15" screen would be cool (or even one of those 12" iBook screens... hmmm...) if you could fab it to be show quality and fit in with the style of the rest of the car. :hail:
But then maybe that's why people use the little screens since they are easier to work with... although I can't imagine why you'd want to stare at a little screen for a movie.

Jeff,
I found some links on LCDs at another forum I use...
Starvision
Video Setup ?s
Pyramid LCD
STN vs. TFT
LCD brand names
$650 to spend on two LCDs
Sounds like Alpine or Pioneer are the best, whereas Pyramid, Pyle, etc. are junk. You might want to try looking at Starvision too, as they look like they have some high quality stuff. Here is an announcement, as they seem to be a pretty new company. Their website doesn't work too well (I can't see the product list) so I sent them a note about that.
I did a search for Icon too but I didn't see anything, sorry.
Hope this helps.

Matt from Starvision replied and said the website works fine, so it's gotta be coded in a way that a Mac can't see it (I'm using Safari, but also tried using Firefox/Mozilla and Internet Explorer and it still doesn't show up.)
Matt (owner?) also gave a link to Starvision products
here with prices, etc. Not bad, and they look like good quality high rez monitors.

thanks for the info... i too have played with the idea of using a laptop for such purposes as they are much cheaper for larger screens. the smaller screens i agree aren't really good for much as i'm planning on using the 7" screens for my camera and mirrors only. i'd like to find at least a 10" screen for video display but i'm worried if you go to big it may look out of place among the other smaller screens.
thank you for the links and suggestions.

the windows are altered heavily and almost impossible to see out of at night so the cameras help with the visual aspect. more for show then anything.

not a bad price if they are decent although anything smaller then 7" is hard to see i think. if anyone runs across a nice motor or something someone has for sale please post up.
