91 Bird System Install

I have a Pioneer DEH P-6400 that has been in the past 4 cars I've owned. It's now moved into my firebird that I got back in November, but my subs never made the migration due to lack of space to put the big *** box.

Now, as of yesterday, my 2 12" MTX Thunder 4000's are seated nicely in my hatch thanks to the custom sub box I built myself. I have no amp rack. The amp is just screwed to the rear deck, but I tied down the wires so everything looks nice and neat. The carpet I got to cover the box doesn't exactly match my interior, but all is well.

More than likely due to the fact this car is a hatch, it's louder than any other car I have had this system in.

Pictures will come when I get a new battery for my polaroid.

When you say "just screwed to the rear deck" you don't mean that you drove a screw into the large flat hump at the back of the car that seperates the rear seats from the trunk do you? Not trying to be a jerk, it's just that our gas tanks are right below that hump. If you're not careful, you could drive a screw right into the tank.

Just a head's up, hopefully it's simply a case of me misunderstanding the mounting location you were describing.

there is not a single place to 'screw' in an amp except at the bottom of the well...

rear deck = fire.

best bet is to build an amp rack, or velcro the amp down.

good luck

Actually, if you're lucky enough to have T-tops ( ) then you can use the screw holes for the little tie down brackets that they put on top of the rear deck. Of course that means you have to find a new way to secure your t-tops, but hey... where there's a will...

But yeah, the only thing I'd screw on the rear deck is a flexible chick. Much lower risk of combustion.

I mounted my amp in the spare tire well... along with the spare tire.

and I don't even know if its possible to screw a chick in our cars... they'd have to be made out of play-doh!

No actually, that's exactly where i screwed the amp in. Except I didn't actually go into the metal. The screw is in the carpet only and you'd be surprised how well it holds. I used short screws. And you can tell it's only attached to the carpet because you can kinda lift the whole thing. But like I said, it's attached more than well enough, and it definately doesn't move.

Trust me, I actually looked under the car and saw the gas tank was right there, not previously knowing exactly where it was located.

Good thinking to check. I haven't heard a horror story about drilling into the tank yet, but it's certainly tempting to use all that flat space Like you said though, there are other ways of going about it.

Sounds like you have a pretty good handle on it. One suggestion I'd make (not something you really have to follow though) is that if you're going to just go through the carpet you could try a small nut and bolt combo to minimize the risk of having the mount pull out of the carpet.

Beyond that, enjoy your system! Don't forget to post picks!

damn. I used to have a "1000 watt" from sony. I actually think the RMS on that amp was like 250 or something horrible. If your happy thats all that matters.

The sony I had did do the job good for about a year but I found myself looking for better quality stuff. It didnt break like alot of people say but still. Thats why I bought Phoenix gold. Worth the money.

I wished I had gone with Velcro, it would have been easier than mounting a piece of mdf to the t-top screw holes, and then mounting the amps to the mdf. Then again, my stuff is harder to steal this way.
There IS a piece of cardboard or something under the carpet on the hump. You probably screwed into that. The carpet wouldn't hold a screw by itself.
Don't forget the front seats can be laid down all the way into the back seat. If you're smooth, you can just reach across her, pull the handle to release the seat back, and lay her down as you climb over the console. If you're not nimble, I don't recommend trying this one since you need to clear the parking brake/shifter.... Flexibility has always been one of my requirements!

I don't think that our cars were designed for encounters of that kind!
