I found a 86 t/a with a emblem on the radio trim that says "Performance Sound" on it, what does it mean?

that means the car has a 4 inch woofer/sub and a 4x6 in place of the usual 6x9s out back and should have a gain switch near the fog light switch

cars with the audio system should have 4 4x6s (2 in the dash as usual, and two in the rear behind thos cloth panels) and along with the rear 4x6s there should be 2 4" 'subwoofers' (1 behind each cloth panel)
If your car has the 'Performance Suspension' logo under the map pocket it means the car should have the WS6 suspension. Look at the RPO sheet in the center consol (that is where mine is anyway) and scan it for 'WS6'

so if the subs & speakers are intact, are they worth salvaging? I can't save the wiring,, the radio connectors are cut off

our cars both have the 6x9s, but the cars with the 'performance' audio system will have a 4x6 and a 4 inch 'subwoofer' in place of the 6x9s. I dont kno how much you would get for a set of thos subs and 4x6s but it wouldnt hurt to stash them away somewhere- ive never come across any. As for sound quality, the 6x9s are the better way to go. a 4 inch speaker will not carry bass all that well, mostly midbass, while the 6x9s are full range speakers and carry bass very well, depeding on the quality of the speaker.

Are these systems any good? I want to stick with a stock head unit but would like a little better sound quility.
Thanks Randy

well if u have them i would hang on to them, but if dont i wouldnt recommend traveling half the country just to nab a pair. If you are looking to make a profit off of them now wouldnt be the time, but maybe 15-20 years down the road you might run into a perfectionist who has just got to have your set because they are time period correct...yadda yadda yadda and might pay out a nice chunk of dough for them
But, as far as sound quality goes, the 6x9s are the better alternative, so many to choose from, so your options arent limited.

as for delco's sound systems, I have a delco tape player without the graphic equalizer and it is DECENT. now the alpine in my grand am is tons better because of the advancement of technology and because i am able to set my own eq bands. What is holding my stock system down are the lame paper speakers that gm supplied with my car, plus the stock stereos have a weak eq band that it responds to, but i have no idea as to how responsive the 5 band eq radios are. As soon as my engine mods are done i will worry about the stereo mods, but until then my collection of tapes will keep me rockin.
