broken power antenna

From doing some searches on older posts, it looks like I'm not the only one with power antenna problems. The previous owner cut the power to the motor on my 91 GTA to stop the groaning.

My antenna is pretty bent, and the motor doesn't work so I'd like to replace it. Are the unpowered antennas fixed mast, or are they collapseable? How hard is swapping in another power antenna? Which is a better option?

Thanks,
Bill

Well, the stock non-pwr ones are fixed mast. Eeeeeaaasy to swap. The hole is the same, just go to the junkyard for a donor. But my solution was this:

Oh and I know the paint on the fender and hood is all screwed up. Just painted it and sanded, so.. yeah.

Heh, nice one. Did you relocate the antenna behind the dash, or is it gone?

While I'm sure a fixed mast antenna gets better reception, I'd like a collapseable one so I can put a car cover on my bird. Any ideas?

I need the radio , and my Pioneer deck gets awsome reception (compared to the POS stock radio in my daily driver cough cough Honda Civic cough cough)

Don't flame for for the Civic. It gets great gas mileage, and it doesn't have any NOS stickers on it or Pep Boys exhaust tips. I promise

Thanks again,
Bill

P.S. If I do replace the power antenna, is it going to break on me in year?

Well my power antenna works great.. About twice a year I lube the mast with spray silicone on a rag.. I've only had to replace the cable that moves the antenna once since 89..

Same antenna since 89? Sweet! I'm guessin my PO didn't exactly lube up the antenna

Does anyone know how much of a PITA it is to take off the fender, replace the antenna, etc., etc.?

Thanks,
Bill

I'll give it a shot.

I've heard some guys who've tried to swap their antennas have a really hard time getting to them from under the wheel well. How hard is removing/reinstalling the fender?

Thanks again,
Bill

Sorry for not replying earlier, I was away on my graduation trip. Anyhow, you dont need to remove the fender, just the fender cover by the wheel. Easy to do. And I just dont have an antenna in the car now, but it still works fine.

And of course, removing the tire makes that MUCH easier.
