Components or regular speakers?

I have a 600W amp (150Wx4 RMS) and I'm looking for some new speakers. I have pioneer 6x9" in the rear and sony 6.5" up front. The sound isn't bad, but its not great. The bass can get mushy and the treble gets fatiguing. I'm not looking for pounding bass, just enough that I can feel it. Its not really a smooth clear sound either. I'd like to keep it under $100 per set. So what would you guys reccomend I do?

Spend more than $100 per set. You will pay extra for "smooth."
If you're worried about money, buy equipment over the winter - that's when sellers have clearance sales on old models to make room for new models.

I'd rather go fast so I'm just looking best speakers under $100.

In that case, save your money. $100 per set won't fix your problems.
On a side note, you can soundproof most of the car for about $200. That will make the whole ride more enjoyable, especially when you're going fast (even if you have the stereo off!). It's a whole lot of work, but well worth it IMO. Not difficult, just time consuming.
If you cut out road/exhaust/engine noise, your stereo won't have to play louder to compete with external noise - which means your speakers don't have to work as hard - which means they won't distort as much.
My car is quieter than my mom's 98 Cadillac STS and my dads 2004 Cadillac SRX on the highway (of course, it still rides like a Firebird, but there's not much you can do about that).

Of course, you're not going to get that kind of sound proofing with a 400+ horse 383, headers, cat back, and Ford 9" rear end. Not surprised your V6 will do it, though.

So, are there no decent speakers for around $100 or so a pair? If not, what/how much would it take to get decent quality speakers?

On a car like that, you would probably notice a bigger difference than I did (not quieter, just a more significant improvement). Surely my V6 is not as loud as an engine/exhaust like that, but its pretty loud compared to anythign else on the road. No power, but it sounds like it has a lot.
For speakers, I'd just spend $200 or so on some components up front and make (or buy) some fiberglass kick panels to put them in. Then get a decent sub and amp (if that is what you want).
Forget about rear speakers. One good set of speakers in an optimal location is better than two mediocre sets in stock locations (which are really bad in our cars).

Now that's an idea (one good set of speakers in a good location) as opposed to 2 sets of "fair" speakers.

Since I like to drive a lot with the T-tops off, a good set of front speakers would be ideal for me. Is there such a thing as good in-dash speakers that fit the factory sized openings?

Also, I'm running an '02 Monsoon head unit, without any amp. What would be a decent small amp to power these front speakers? Is the Delco/Monsoon amp any good for this?

Definetly get the subs in the back. I love the sound and with the T Tops off in my 86 I still have quality sound. Now I also have 6x9 Pioneers in the sails but it is the 12s in the back that provide the thump and pull the whole system. If you have the right head unit you can turn the subs off if you don't want to play them.

The Monsoon head unit probably has a better internal amp than the original stock, but wouldn't be enough to run a good set of aftermarket speakers.
You won't get much out of 4x6 dash speakers in terms of midbass or imaging. The sound bouncing off the windshield is easy to distort and hard on the ears. It doesn't matter how good the speakers are, they won't make up for such a bad location. We had a huge discussion on this in another thread if you do a little searching.
You can get a decent 50-75W RMS/channel amp to run just about any set of component speakers - just try to match it with the approximate RMS rating of the speakers. The general rule of thumb is that you get what you pay for, as always - but a good amp in that power class is usually in the $120-150 range. You can usually pick out the crappy brands by sorting a list of amps by price: the cheap ones "seem" to have about twice as much power as the other amps for the same price.
I personally like Alpine and Phoenix Gold.

OK, now I think I understand a bit better, Thanks!

Looks like I'll be checking into kick panel speakers and an amp.....

if you want a GOOD set of components for $100 bucks... your ONLY choice is EBAY or IKESOUND...

good luck... because kappa perfect 6.1's go for about $230 on the 'net.

I find it hard to believe that no one can suggest a decent pair of speakers for this man that are under 100 bucks...

Instead of trying to have him do it your way, just answer the mans question please. That is overly annoying.

Not everyone can even JUSTIFY spending 250 bucks on a set of speakers for your car.

I WOULD suggest a good speaker under $100... but I've never heard of one... and I'm fairly certain they don't exist...

we have to live in a place called reality...

I suggested the only thing I think he may have some luck in... searching on ebay for some really good deal, maybe some used components or something...

and instead of chiming in that we are 'annoying' or not helping the submitter... maybe you should think of what good YOU are doing... What speaker did you suggest? Hrm... guess my browser cut off that part of your post... Time to switch back to IE.

firebirdjosh... if you want my honest opinion, you will NOT find anything better than what you have, for a measly $100... except maybe with some good investigation skills and/or luck on ebay...

good luck sir.

He wanted speakers that aren't fatiguing with clear bass under $100. I told him it won't happen - that is my opinion. $100 per set won't make his situation any better.... I'm sure what he has already would be considered "decent" by most people.
I told him what he needs to do to achieve what he wants.
I use Mozilla Firefox, maybe it did cut off the part where Disturbed suggested the speakers, cause I didn't see it either. Oh, wait, it's because there aren't any that fit the criteria.....

yeah, Firefox here too... guess we're in the same boat.

oh well... I'm too lazy to open up IE to see his entire post... I'll just assume it's there...

well... now I'm kinda curious... I'd love to find out what speaker has strong, tight bass, and crisp highs, for less than $100 for a whole set!

maybe I'll dig around and find IE real quick...

His question was answered. In the opinion of those who answered, there are no products that fit his needs and his budget. Period. That's a perfectly valid answer.

Everybody could scream about how awesome Kraco speakers are, but that wouldn't really help him much if he bought them, installed them, then realized that he didn't improve anything, would it?

It's actually possible he could spend $100 per set, and find that the sound actually got worse. How bad would that be?
The odds of improving the sound are much better if he spends a little more, like I suggested.
