MMMMM nothing like 2 channel mono huh? Something like this has been posted. Essentially you're just going back to mono sound, since all the sound is coming from the center of the car; unless you balance it out with other speakers.

Driver's kick panel (left channel) - Driver's side of console (right channel) - Passenger's side of console (left channel) - Passenger's kick panel (right channel)
It's an interesting thought, but that would de-localize the soundstage. You'd be better off summing up a center channel with mono in the center of the dash.

How about this for a spin on it. One speaker in the drivers kickpanel and one in the center behind the hvac controls (angled to match the kickpanel of course). Wouldnt this estentially give you the same distance from speaker to ear for both left and right creating a nearly perfect soundstage? Of course it would sound like crap to whomever is riding in passenger seat, but who cares what they think, you're the one driving right?

thats a nifty idea. but ud almost have to match it up with the other side for ur passengers. That is unless you have no life or friends to drag along.

I still think either the center speakers would get mixed. I guess you could always try it out though.
It'd be like having 2 sets of headphones. One left channel on your ear, then a right and left channel on the other ear, then off in the distance another right channel. This has been talked about before in a different thread. Someone was going to mount the same or similiar pattern in their center AC vents using tweeters. It was a group decision it would mess up the sound stage and wasn't worth the effort.
Also remember it's best to get as close to equal distance between the left and right channels to the listener(s). That's why putting speakers in the doors can sound weird. The driverside speaker would be right there, but the passenger side one is several feet away.
I'm sure Jim will chime in since he's the expert at this.

Thats why I was saying that just two speakers would have basically equal distance if placed one in the kick panel and one opposite it behind the hvac controls. i wouldnt put any others in the passengers side, those would cancel out too much sound and really mess up the stage. Like I mentioned, i dont think it needs to be great sounding for your passenger, they're only riding in your car once in a while, you're there all the time. i think in a year of owning my car, i've had my wife and one freind sit in that seat twice each, otherwise we take her car (better on gas and has AC/heat, yes I have no heat)
