Alright.

So I bought an 84 Firebird from a little old lady, who bought IT back in 86, and have since redone ALOT of stuff on it...

Interior is almost 90% complete.
Replaced every single bushing I could ever find.

New tie end rods, new end links for my sway bar, yada yada.

So, when I got it it STILL had the stock stereo in it (Which, seriously, killed me... Almost) I was DESPERATE (and broke!) so I bought a Phase Lunear CD player from Pep Boys (This is where you stop laughing) for 40 bucks. It's actually worked pretty nicely. My CD's don't get eaten up, I never listen to the radio unless you count my SERIUS radio.

Now, my speakers... Hehehehe... Are still the stock ones. And I think they are starting to go bad. How long does it take for the **** to die? What's a good replacement? I don't want competetion type stuff. Just something that will get me by (Without making my boyfriend or guy friends cringe)... Idea's! Please!

Remember, I'm poor broke college student. But any $ I have goes into either A)Keeping the mall in business or B)Keeping Pep Boys in business. Occasionally I'll throw some in my gas tank.

(I love Auto stores... Seriously.)

With that radio, I wouldn't waste too much money on a pair of speakers whose quality you can't take advantage of.

If you just want to get up and running on the cheap for now, look at these OEM replacements for the front:

For the back I'm having a hard time finding the OEM replacements, but I'll bet you could score some used ones from fellow board members for the cost of shipping.

Lost me there, now I can't help you... Never mind, your in cali anyway.
(Sorry, I have a hard time not taking the cheep shot.)
I'll back what Jim said and add if your bothered by what people think, just tell them you replaced them with stockers and get anything cheep. With that radio no one you don't tell will be able to hear any difference at all. So Cheep-O 4X6s and 6X9s and tell poeple there stocker, say you're keeping the interior stock .

Another reason that I actually recommended the stockers is believe it or not, the stock speakers sound better than the majority of the ultra-cheap aftermarket stuff that I've used/heard. The stock speakers are much more efficient (a big plus with a crap radio), and have a much more natural, pleasant midrange. What they lack is bass and high frequency extention, but for me it's not worth buying horrible sounding speakers just to get a little bit more trebble and maybe some more lousy sounding bass.

I would choose the stock over crap like Ultimate, Pyle, Pyramid and other flea market brands, even if the cost was the same.

amen to that.i have stock speakers all around in my 86 2.8. (so i feel for ya) and they sound GREAT. whey better then the jensen garbage that came in my jeep charookie. my GTA has some as-of-yet unidentified Pioneer speakers in the back, and stock up front.

i can deffinatly agree with jim on the 'crap vs. stock' comment. they were reling on that stock equipment to help sell the car!

I'm not prepared to call the stock speakers "great" just yet. They still suck, but their drawbacks are a lot more tolerable than the drawbacks you get with the uber-cheap aftermarkets.

a Sony head unit is just enough to by with. they are cheap, but they will let you have some pretty good sound from your aftermarket speakers....Pioneer makes good, inexpensive speakers

Alright...

So I got a tiny bit bored, and decided to see what was behind my speakers yesterday evening.

Giant hole in the rear.

Lined it with insulation, stuffed it w/ poly fill, stuffed the actual speaker where the little metal cage is at with poly fil and stuffed it back in (did that to both sides.) Oh yeah, the rear ones say Pontiac on the back of the speakers.

Now, those little PITA's in the front ones, did the same thing when I stuffed my dash with insulation and poly fil. And those say "Made in Japan" but no brand... Are those stock ones? And they have this funny little nipple thing where the mesh? stuff is at.

That was kinda fun. I love taking **** apart. (putting it back together is a diff. ball game.)

My car sounds a BILLION times better.... I can not even put how much emphasis is on it. Oh yeah, and my rear speaker wires weren't full connectedy, so that's why the sound would go in and out. So I rewired those too.

Now, I've decided to start saving (sigh. No more random shopping trips to PepBoys for me.) for a better head unit. I'm thinking I want to spend no more than like 300 on it. Anyone got opinions?

And Needaz, I'm not quite concerend with what people think. I just don't like my B.F. making fun of me... lol (He does it jokingly.)

Check out the head unit thread I just made. It should answer all of your questions.
