how to use amp settings
i.e. variable crossover (lpf, hpf, full) and gain
I have 1 x 12 in sub and a 400 watt amp in the trunk

Gain = the amp's volume more or less. You set it in relation to your deck so that the amp won't max out before the HU is all the way up. Search and you will find a ton of articles about setting gains.
LP/HP = low pass or high pass filter. Lowpass cuts off higher frequencies after a given point (for subwoofer applications), Highpass cuts off low frequencies below a given point (for speaker applications), and flat amplifies everything. The 'variable crossover' is the point at which you want your LP/HP filter to take effect. It serves no function if you have the amp's crossover set to full.
