I have an older Kenwood receiver with the retractable face. The small black idler gear for the retractor broke so I'm trying to find a replacement.

So I'm looking for the gear or an old unit for parts.


Any help is appreciated.

 

You right on the model #? Chan't find any info on a KRC-801 or KRC-901. My be to old. I have most of the Kenwood service info thats out in PDF, but if it's old, there may not be a PDF of the SM. Double check the model# and if I can't find a part # I'll get you Kenwood's parts line number.

 

Yes, it's old. It's actually a tape deck. I like it though and want to get it working again.

There seems to be good support on parts because I've seen some parts available online but there isn't any pictures to identify which gear it is.

The phone number might help get me to someone that would remember if it was a common issue with the unit.

 

Sorry, no general parts line number. But this should get you going. If you do get ahold of someone in a parts department, see if the drive unit is available as an ***'y. Most of them are, and getting the assembly makes life so easy.

Sorry for reviving an old thread.

I too have a KRC-901, I love it, but the black idler gear D13-1202-04 is stripped. I was wondering if there was somewhere I might find the gear. I chacked www.Pacparts.com and they say the gear has been discontinued (the only thing apparently discontinued). http://www.pacparts.com/library/mode...st_part&back=0

 

Here's a list of contacts to try. I ordered mine from East Coast. A service note came with it stating that all of the items need to be replaced because the white gears may be causing the black one to strip out.

It was ordered in 2006. Let me know if it works out.

To be honest I never was able to get it to work after the gear swap. It would error out and I didn't have the time to sit down and trouble shoot it. It would occasionally bind so I was also afraid of breaking the gears again.

Well, I decided I wanted to check it out and see what's going on with it and found that the flexible ribbon between the motor and the jack had split across two traces. It was very difficult to notice and I couldn't see it until I removed it for inspection. The three switches tested good so I had assumed that I had somehow installed the gears incorrectly or something. Make sure to check continuity from the switches to the jack if you have any further problems. That’s the only sure way to tell and I think it may of had something to do with the black gear failing.

What makes this unit difficult to work with is the microscopic size of the gear retainers and their eagerness to fly away to the other side of the room. That and the fact that it has to be reassembled each time for testing so it’s difficult to see what’s going on and it becomes a little tedious to check things after making changes. It also likes to bind when not fully assembled if you aren’t careful. I had originally thought the issue was with the jack because it doesn’t look like it lines up very well and it flops around some. I had also considered this was an issue when I set it aside a while back.

Unfortunately my fear of breaking the new gears (specifically the black one) had come true but I was able to use the extra white gear that was replaced in the kit. I jumpered the two connections to the farthest switch temporarily and it now works as it should. The white gear doesn’t belong there and the spring doesn’t really fit. I’m thinking the black gear is made to fail to save the rest of the drive train. You can check the drive train by removing the retainer from the gear next to the motor (the one with the spring) and pulling it aside. This will help you to verify things are working mechanically before applying power and watching it grind to a halt.

I really like the unit and I’m wondering if it would be worth while picking up any cheap ones for parts or something. Either way if I come across something that has useable parts I’ll let you know. The gear sets were an official update to correct a binding issue, so there should be more updated gear sets inside of a lot of units out there. The original gears are more translucent than the replacements so you should be able to tell by the difference in color. Also many may have failed due to other things like the flex ribbon and such so the possibility of parts isn’t totally hopeless. There are places that you can order gears and they may have something that will work for replacing the black gear. If you do find something I would be interested in buying a few as well. I’m also interested in ways of bypassing the stealth feature altogether.

you mention that you bought a gear set... was it a kit, or was it the conglomeration of the gears that you have listed there individually...

They listed it separately and I also received an individual tag for each part. I called yesterday since I had everything in hand and asked if they also had a kit as well as individual parts. He went back and checked each part and they were all discontinued -even the little retainers.

As a note, I received a couple of lever arms. Another way to tell if it's been updated is by the size of the brass roller on one of the large white gears. The updated one is larger.

 

That really sucks, I really like the radio, it was neat, I guess not any more.

Well, if you're really giving up on it I'll take it off of your hands for parts.
Otherwise put it in a box somewhere and I'll post here if I find anything.

 

I also have a Kenwood KRC-901 but mine has a defective sensor on the shutter.
The shutter only functions properly when it's warm.
My tech tells me that the sensor isn't available any longer.
I would really like to get my hands on an old unit to scavenge the sensor.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. $$$

 

The sucky thing is I really liked the radio... I really would like to replace my current new radio with the KRC-901, it always got cool reviews at car shows...

I understand how you feel John, although I've really never had anything to do with shows.
The problem I have is that my 10 disk changer is the same generation as the KRC-901 and isn't compatible with any never units.
Therefore, I have to ask what you did with yours and if you still have it, would you be willing to allow me to buy it from you?

A little update for all you who like old-school. Like Me...

I am attempting to have a few of the idler gears made... I have no idea if it will work out or not, but I have a friend with a laser cutter and he is going to attempt to make some out of nylon for me.

Don't know about prices or anything at this point... hopefully not too bad.

Update, I had no luck with the Gear... I had someone with a Laser cutter that tried making one, but I really do not think he took the time. At any rate, it just would not work just by looking at it. So I am still without the little gear.

I have considered 3D printing. The problem is the piece is so small and fine that I am not sure if it would work or not. I cannot get a cutter small enough for my CNC machine to make the gear. Yes I considered using my CNC, but it is just too small... I might be able to make one on the CNC and then hand finish it with some tool & die files

 

FWIW, I'm still interested if anything comes of it.

 

IIRC the size of the gear is something like 1/4" Diameter, and it has something like 12 or 10 teeth. So imagine this teenie-tiny little gear that runs the entire faceplate.

 

Yep, I haven't looked at it years but that sounds about right.

 

I got a good Kenwood KDC 519

 

the retractable face I believe was found in the KRC901, & 801 only (possibly the 902 & 802), I do not believe the KDC 519 has this feature. You might be unaware, but Kenwood, Clarion, and some others at one time had a face that would retract into the body of the radio, or flip over. The KRC 801/901 had this nifty feature where it had a plate that covered the face to give it the appearance of a removed radio or Radio delete., the frame of the face would rise up, then a shield would come out while the entire body of the radio would retract into the radio. The Face would lower back down to cover it over. Talk about a show-stopper, everyone who took the chance to watch it in action was amazed... even today it is an amazing feat of engineering.

The 801, 901, 802 & 902 appear to be identical designs, The 903 & 953 however seem a little different

 

Yep, the KDC 519 looks to be a different set up and probably has a different gear configuration. Thanks for the offer though.
