JL 10W7 Setup
JL 10W7 Setup
I want a sound system, And i've done plenty of research and found that JL audio is top notch. I dont know a whole lot about audio equipment so heres some questions i have:
- Some woofers when there playing makes you feel like theres pressure in your ears, when its not even playing that loud...What causes that?
- Woofers need to breathe to sound good I know that. Is that why some people put woofers in with the magnet part showing and the face built into the box ( it looks upside down )
- I did the online help thing with crutchfield and the said the would suggest a 2 channel amp bridged 500 watt...Does that sound good?
- Where are some of the cheaper places to purchase the jl audio products
- What brand of amps are of better quality?

the reason why the woofers make it feel like there is pressure in your ears is because they move alot of air and create bass. if you turn it down it wont make you feel like that, it needs to be up pretty good to do that. woofers dont need to "breathe" to sound good. yes they need space away from them mainly because they will overheat. but yes obviously if they are covered with clothes or something they wont sound good, but they dont need ALOT of space. the only space they need is cubic inches in the box, that will make it sound better, especially in a ported box. keep the sub in the right way, not with the magnet sticking out. crutchfield is high priced, go to sonicelectronics.com or onlinecarstereo.com to order good stuff.
almost all jl audio supplies are expensive, especially the W7's, so you could even try ebay if you want to. if your only getting one W7, then get a mono amp, even if your getting 2 subs, id rather have a mono amp.
the brands of amps that are the best in quality are 1. kenwood (expensive), 2.kicker(probably one of the best, but kind of expensive), 3. hifonics, 4. orion, 5. Jl audio. these are all very good quality amps, you need to keep one W7 with 500 watts constant power, or atleast around there, so make sure you get an amp thats atleast 400-500 watts RMS, not total power, make sure its RMS. the boss ripper amps are actually good to since ive owned one, but most boss products suck. so get a mono amp. thats about it, and do your research on most of this stuff, it helps.

one more thing, there are other subs out there that sound better than jl audio and are cheaper. you could go with 1 or 2 alpine type R's, those would sound better than a W7 in a ported box. believe me.

if i were you i would try power acoustik or profile if your looking for budget. i have a profile 2000 watt and it is a nice piece for the price. power acoustik has some good solid amps in the 150 dollar range that will do at least 500 watts bridged. i dont know about their mono amps b/c when i was looking for an amp i wanted 2 channel but i remember finding some good 2-channel amps for around 150 on ebay so check them out. that w7 is going to be very expensive though they are like 600 a piece i think.
I can get the 10W7 for around $429.99, Im getting companies to beat prices of other companies. I dont know if this is right but i talked to crutchfield online and they recccomended that i get a 2 channel 500W bridged amp. I asked why i would want 2 channels for one sub and they said it would give me more power and would perform better if i connected both channels to the same woofer. Is that right.
Im making my own fiberglass box, and for the top part i want to make it out of something cheap first that i can easily shape to see what it looks like. What can i use? The only thing i can think of is Styrafoam.

well i dont know about your last question, but for the sub and amp, if youre deadset on jl and dont care about the price, get there 500/1 amp for the one w7. I have two 12 w3 pushed by the 500/1 and it sound amazing. It's expensive, but itll bump like crazy. A friend of mine had a 10 w7 in his 4th gen bird and it hit harder then my friend with 3 12 w3 in his chevelle.

if youre willing to buy used subs and amps, its worth it. ive found some really good deals doing it that way. i bought a 600 watt 4-channel amp for $60. i then bought a 12" orion sub in a box for $50. i was amazed at how hard it bumps for how much i paid. my advice for buying stuff used (especially the subs) is to ask them to test it before you buy it. good luck with your system

if you want the best system for a pretty cheap price, get a used orion 2500D amp and 2 12'' alpine type R's, put those in a ported box with nice size ports, that will thump.

Dude also keep in mind that you could put together a system that would own that jl w7 for the same amount that you are just gonna buy the sub for. Also w7's are really particular about what kinda box you put them in. So unless you have alot of experience, be ready to spend some $$ on the enclosure.
Seriously, if you want good sound and are set on jl, do 2 w3v2's on a 500.1 and be done with it. W7's are a Pro speaker when used correctly. When used incorrectly they are a wannabe speaker. "Kid bought too much sub, not enough amp, and had no clue what to do with it." type setup. I see it WAAAAAY too much around here.
And honestly, with the questions you asked in the first post....... Go to a shop. It'll cost more but you will learn something. The internet buying thing is for people who know what they want, and know what to do with it. You're flyin blind kid, go get learned.
