Replacement antenna
Replacement antenna
I need to replace my antenna on my 1992 Camaro Convertible. My local dealer gave me part #15087886. When I got home and looked at it, it is the newer type with the spiral wire along the entire mast. Is this the only factory antenna available or did my dealer give me the wrong year?

I would say forget the factory antenna, this is what I did with mine. It looks much cleaner now and get better radio reception. 14'' Whip antenna, 8 bucks at any auto parts store.

The standard mast is the same for hundreds of different GM cars. In the mid-90's GM upgraded the mast to include the 'spiral wire'. This deflects the wind rushing around the mast while you're going down the road. People used to complain about a constant whistling noise caused by the smooth antenna mast. So, GM fixed it. It works perfectly. No more whistling. They gave you the correct antenna. It is just an updated design. The mast can be interchanged with many, many other cars.
I have never had any whistling sound with my original antenna. I don't like the look of the new style as the base is a little different as well as the spiral wire. I wanted to stay with the original look. Thanks for the info, Joe

The older GM antenna that your looking for can easily be found at your nearest pick-ur-part (auto wrecker). As mentioned above, they used that same antenna on many, many models. Just bring a wrench and choose the one that's exactly what you want, and for a lot cheaper than what the dealer wants. Take 2 and have a spare.

Your best bet is to rebuild the antenna,by just replaceing the plastic guide that runs it.{if it will not move up and down}.Its not that hard ,by just drilling out some of the rivets and getting to the cable you should be able to make it function again.

The antenna on my car is just a generic "whip antenna" Just go to advance auto and look at the stereo stuff, theres like 100 of them just sitting there.
