My "Stealthy" Sub Box...

I got tired of seeing wires and a dark colored sub box sitting inside a light colored interior, so.....

I bought OEM replacement carpet at Autozone, cut out the holes for the subs, then glued it on there.

I then cut off the excess, pushed the carpet under the hatch plastic, and used some "Carpet Tape" to anchor it behind my seats.

Whatcha think?

Axle/Gears: huh?? guessing stock.
not bad. I would have slit the carpet right under the wiring at the amp so that it is totally hidden, but it looks good regardless.

ya looks good, very stock colour appearing. I would have hid the amp all together, like in the glove box.

I glued the carpet down to the sub box itself...So there was no way to slit the carpet right under the amp.

I buy the subs and amp from best buy, but I had to buy the box from ebay because best buy had no way of getting me one that would fit.

And yeah, the floor mats are gonna go too.

What about a little wire loom? Just to keep the wires hidden. Otherwise looks great!

Looks great dude, but it would look twice as clean if you hid those wires a little better. Definately a great install though!

Well guys, after trying my best to make the carpet look good and smooth, ive decided that im going to take out the sub box, and keep the carpet on only the box itself, and not the whole back hatch area.

Reason being, is because i cant keep the carpet smooth, and it looks really bad with creases in it.

I am also going to hide the wires under the amp like i did before it was carpeted, so it will look much cleaner, and have the speaker wire not come from behind, but next to the other wires.

Re: My "Stealthy" Sub Box...

how do you guys like those type E subs? whats their power rating both RMS and MAX?

I'm shopping for a pair of drivers and the 5 channel amp I have is limiting my subs choices dramatically because it doesn't have a huge sub output and is only stable to 2ohm.

Re: My "Stealthy" Sub Box...

What kind of sound difference do you get from higher peak power but same RMS?
My Sub: MTX 12" 400W peak and 250RMS
Friends sub: JBL 12" 1000W peak and 250RMS
and mine gets a cleaner sound but just as mutch bass.
Because i was looking at getting a set of type E subs but don't know if i will get better sound or just louder.

Hey Kubus,

Are you still able to use your t-top bag back there with that box? Been thinking of putting a box in my Camaro, but I dont want to not be able to store the tops. Where did you get that box?

Re: My "Stealthy" Sub Box...

The box was custom made for me by my local car audio shop. It fits perfectly in the well and sounds incredible.

I unfortunately dont have t-tops so I didnt have that problem. I really dont know where you could put them... Ive seen people fabricate boxes that they can store their t-tops in, but it would decrease airspace and reduce the effectiveness of the box. I think one could put the t-tops on the back seat if absolutely necessary...

Re: My "Stealthy" Sub Box...

Ok if you guys want good subs that will hit hard think MTX 7500 8500 or 9500 thunder series, if you want excellent quality and still good bass go JL W7's, sure its all expensive, but it's the best bang for your buck. I'm just going to use something small like a 10" or an 8". I don't want too much bass in a muscle car like a have in my Neon lol

Re: My "Stealthy" Sub Box...

JL's are nice.. i dont like MTX.. and there is better bang for your buck.. ever hear of Digital Designs, RE Audio, Audioque, Soundsplinter, Fi car audio? those companies make better subs than MTX.. and JL's are nice and have some nice SQ but the price is a little high..

yeah, MA audio is decent, some of their lines are solid stuff, but its the companies that you dont hear a lot about and that arent in bestbuy and circuitcity and not on pimp my ride that are the good subs

Well guys...

I made a few adjustments to the looks of the box..

As you can see, it's not so "Stealthy" anymore, but it certainly looks cleaner, no more lumps or creases in the carpet, and now no more dangling wires.

Im happy with it now lol

Re: My "Stealthy" Sub Box...

For real stealth, mount the amp in the spare tire well or in the now impossible to open rear glovebox. Thats how i did mine. However my top plate of the sub box is flush with the rear gas tank hump so it does't impede rear glovebox use. I had a amp rack designed for my Amps and Cap in the spare tire well and bolts in where the spare bolted into. It gets a lil steamy in there once the amps get to pushin the subs and comps so i installed a row of 12V super quiet CPU case fans along those rear panel vents to get some cooler air circulating in there. I run them off a relay that turns on with an ignition lead. Ill click some pics of the whole setup once the car gets back outa storage. Still another month though.

I'm running an oooold type R that's perfect for me, I keep blowing the tinsel leads on it though, but I had a good run with it, one of the voice coils is shorted so its running at 4 ohms, still hits hard buuut its time to go with a W3 from JL

I've been pondering making an angled box like that myself....Have any of you guys put hinges on it so that you could put little odds and ends underneath?

Why not build a box to fit in the bottom of the hatch area, buy a grill cover and put things on top?

I see, I dont consider that a "glove box" because of the simple fact it is the rear of the vehicle and it would be difficult to reach for your "Gloves" (haha) from the drivers seat.

Putting stuff on top of your speakers (even with a speaker grill) could damage your speakers by restricting the air in front of the subwoofer and not letting the air move freely. Not to mention IF you did do this it would diminish the sound of the speakers because the sound waves would be reflected back onto the subwoofer itself as opposed to moving throughout the car.

A box in the hatch limits your options if you also want to use it to put stuff. You could always make the grille tall to give the sub enough room to move air if that is a concern.

Other option is a shallow sub(s) if you want to build a box with hinges.

Another option is to build a box for four 8s sealed on top of the gas tank, thereby freeing up your trunk.

Soundwaves deflect based on the shape of the object it hits. It is usually not an issue.

As an MECP Certified Audio/Video Tech, I would definitely say that ANYTHING sitting on top of your subs, unless they are in a bandpass box with the ports un-obstructed, would/will hinder the performance of your subs. Hinges on the box would work so you can put stuff underneath would work. Its not what the sound waves are reflecting off of, but when the sound wave bounces directly back on to the speaker itself is when the sound will start to diminish. That is why they make Dynasorb,

They talk about back wave distortion in that link, but it would be the same concept if you had all kinds of stuff piled on top of un-covered (non-bandpass) subwoofers.

You'll see that White'89 wanted to put "little odds and ends" in the rear not fully cover the sub. Just trying to give some options as the hatch is limited in size. Also, Dynasorb would be overkill for a sub box IMO.

Never heard of MECP. Is that some kind of correspondence course?

MECP stands for Mobile Electronics Certified Professional, it is a part of CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). Most (not all) shops will ask you to study and take (and pass) the basic test before you can work for them, unless you have been to one of the trade schools and have your certs. from that school. If you would like more info on it you can go to www.mecp.com. Dynasorb is made especially for sub boxes, very similar to Dynamat, but it helps dissipate the sounds waves instead of reflecting them. It also works extremely well when placed IN your doors behind your speakers, or in our case (Camaro/Firebird/Trans-Am) on the body panel behind the rear speakers (never even tried to do anything with the front speakers, other than replace them).
