Speakers that WILL NOT Fit stock locations
JBL p6452 two way 4"x6" will not fit in the dash holes on my '87 IROC. They stick up out of the holes about 1/4" on the back side and 1/2" on the front. Turned on the stereo without them bolted down. Much better than stock. too bad they don't fit.
JBL p953 6"x9" will fit in the back spots, but you have to either cut or remove the foam padding. It's too thick. But they sound awesome.
Post what you know (doesn't) fit(s) in the stock locations, and how well they sound.

Re: Speakers that WILL NOT Fit stock locations
4X6 are really what you need. This is the OE size for the fronts. Maybe your magnets are too thick. I remember using some eclipse in the dash and they were installed as original equipment!
In the sail panels, the OE size are 6X9. When I had my 88 camaro, I remember using Infinity and later Zapco in there. Even with the thicker magnets, they still fit right there without issue.

Re: Speakers that WILL NOT Fit stock locations
my 6x9's didnt fit either but i just pushed the foam away a bit and put them in any way. the magnet presses into the mat but they still sound really good. but because there was nothing on there when i got, it i have nothing to compare it too. the 4x6 fit on the right side but not on the left. i just left the mounting bracket raised a little it seems to be all right.

Re: Speakers that WILL NOT Fit stock locations
Magnets on the JBL's are freakin huge. Hence why they stand up so much taller. Was tempted to modify the bracket, but then I'd need to cut the underside of the dash pad, and it's already got one small crack, so I'd like to make sure it doesn't get any more.

On the front, theres tabs that slide OVER the speaker at the corner. You have to kinda manoever them into place before you bolt down. Is this your problem?
On the rears, they should still fit.
Dont put the covers on, no need for them, unless you want to. I have pioneer and sony's, but it shouldnt be that different.
Pix always help.
Heres mine:

Ah, the Firebird and Camaro differ in dash mounting. The magnets of mine are sitting on the plastic that looks like the housing for my cluster. There's no way they're sitting down any deeper.

Oh, wasnt aware of that. I guess that doesnt leave you a whole lot of options....
ie: cut, drill, etc....
Atleast if you want the dashpad to fit over top.

Really? I might have to try this then. Just 1/4" generic spacers, or anything specific? Not excited about taking the dash pad back off. That scares the bejeezus out of me.

Re: Speakers that WILL NOT Fit stock locations
Hey scary, if spacers work, you can probably do it for free. Just use something rigid.
I was very pissed when i spent the big $$$ on my 6x9s, NEW and found out how bad the acoustics in the car were. ie; you can only hear them well in certain locations, not so much the driver seat. So i kinda put spacers on the rear of the speaker, to point it at an angle towards the front of the car.
You might need longer screws. Trim screws work fine. And an assortment of washers, or i used little "nuts". 1 nut around each screw should do the trick.

Clarion SRC4617 4x6 speakers - right one drops right in. Left one sits a little too high, but I just snugged the screws down real tight and the speaker shifted down into place (almost). It is still about 1/8" too high, but the dash pad fits over fine because it leaves room before the grate. Sound awesome except down low (but how much bass do you want from a 4x6?)
Jensen JS692 6x9 in the rear. Fit just as easy as stock. I was actually expecting them to sound like **** for $19 but whatever, they dont sound half bad IMO. Definately a big improvement over stock (the car had hi-tech speakers in the back when I got it that sucked, and said mfg. 1988 or something). For the amount that you hear them they are a steal. Paper cones though, so no loud deep bass. They hammer on the mids with my HU.

Re: Speakers that WILL NOT Fit stock locations
Infinity 4x6 plates dont fit the stock location very well, the magnet on the passenger and driver side interferes with the defrost vents that head toward your windows. Personall I cut around them and used some foil tape to make it work, but on the drivers side you run into the defrost vent and the gauge cluster, a little bit of dremeling does it. Even after that they dont sit down flush, but the dash pad covers them. I also reccomend taking a knife and cutting out all the material around the speaker plate cover grill thing. It gives a better sound that way.

Re: Speakers that WILL NOT Fit stock locations
i just put infinity 4x6 plates in the dash of my car, i think they were just 2 way, the passengerside was a perfect fit, the driverside was a disaster, the back of the dash behind the gauge cluster need to be trimmed and the ductwork needed to me heavily modded to get the speaker to fit, they do sound good though
