Third Gen Subs
Third Gen Subs
My parents had a 1985 Trans Am with every option. My buddy an I are arguing that the factory subs ever came in the sail panels. My parents' did. It was ordered in August or July of 1984. (I was only 5 at the time). They then passed the car to me in the early 90s.
I decided to pull out the factory "sub" and the related dash control. (yes... dumb move on my part).
But can someone PLEASE provide a picture of a FACTORY 1985+ subwoofer that was mounted in the sail panel?

I purchased a New GM setup from ebay last year just to resale in a few more years. 2 new subs, new wires and new switch. Here is what the factory sub looks like.

UQ7 was the RPO code, and it was available thru the 1988 model year. Beginning in '89, cars got a rear seat shoulder harness, which used some of the available space where the boxes went, so the subwoofer system was no longer available.
theimpaler68, nice pic of your sub boxes and speakers. The boxes are factory. I don't know if you know this, but the speakers are not. Your speakers are nice upgrades over the factory speakers. And I could be wrong, but your "subs" look like woofers(coaxials, actually), not subwoofers. Regardless, I'm sure they sound great!
The other posted pix are completely factory. Here's another pic of a spare set I have:

i listen to mainly rock and metal so i like more of the high pitch that these give off. i just posted them with my new infinity's that i bought cause they didnt have speakers. they do sound nice though. i plan on getting the basslink t box for a sub setup personally. and dont you just love these over the 6*9's?

Re: Third Gen Subs
I ordered my '87 Formula with this option, not really knowing what to expect. But yes, I loved them right away! They provide a clean, sharp beat that doesn't overpower or destroy.
I had the surrounds on the subs redone several years ago because, at the time, I couldn't find any subs that small--which I now know are out there, but I didn't have the internet to help me search. Everywhere I went, the "experts" kept telling me, "no way... no such speaker ever existed," that I "must be mistaken about the size." So when I pulled one and took it with me, people were like, "well, I'll be... it really is a sub!"
I like your two-way plate speakers. I swapped the stock 4x6 coaxials a couple of years ago to 4x6 three-ways, but I'll probably swap those for plate speakers soon.

Re: Third Gen Subs
the highs in mine are really crisp. i listen to queensryche and dio and sabbath and stuff like that. the list goes on but they sure beat any 6*9 setups i have heard. and on finding the parts. i bought mine t/a with the passenger side box missing. so i asked a friend of mine who worked for gm and the computers had nothing. he asked everyone he new including his boss who completely rebuilt a 3rd gen... he said i was dreaming. he told him that he had pics on it and the guy said that they must have been custom maid. so i took additional pics of the gm part # and he still said that it was wrong. i found my replacements on ebay $35 shipped i was so lucky. i will never get rid of these boxes. i think you will like the plate speakers though
