there is a wireing harness avalible for our cars. so that you dont have to cut up the factory wires. when you get the harness it should come with a color color coded diagram for an easy installl. then al you need is a dash kit for a nice clean look!

Re: Help im a noob (cd player install)
The easiest way to mount the new head unit is to go buy an install kit. The plastic filler plate will come with this kit. Pretty much any place that sells car audio has them. Just make sure to get the right one for your car. I'd also recommend the wiring adapters if they have them. That way you won't have to cut the factory wiring. Just match up the wire colors on the adapters with the wiring that came with the stereo. Once you have this stuff it's really easy.
Oh yeah. Pick up some butt connectors and some wire strippers/crimpers if you don't have any.
Good luck and enjoy your new stereo.

I relied heavily on my Haynes manual when I installed mine. It's easy enough, just compare the labeled wires in your Haynes manual to the labeled wires in your head unit's manual. Connect them and use a little shrink wrap.

You don't need to buy a wiring harness or anything like that. Just know how to solder and you're good. Below is a picture of what the wires and the connector look like in your car. Pull out the installation manual or whatever it is that tells you what wires are what on the back of the head unit. Match them up and solder them together. I recommend cutting the wires off of the connector one at a time because some of them are the same/very similar colors.

Just match the wires up, it's super easy
Edit: Oh yeah, you still need a filler plate like said before. If you're not afraid to cut a lot of stuff up you can get one that looks really nice for around 90 bucks. If you are, you can just get the cheap one that looks like crap, which you would have to get anyway because the fancy ones take a month to get

Re: Help im a noob (cd player install)
Get the 20-pin adapter harness (available at most car audio stores) and splice its raw ends to the raw ends of your new harness. Now you have an intermediate harness which will fit between the car and the new radio without cutting any wires and is totally reversible if you want to put a stock radio back in. You will most likely need an antenna adapter too since GM decided to use a smaller sized end with the 20 pin harness.
Some stores may even splice the two together for you if you bring your new harness in with you.

Re: Help im a noob (cd player install)
Also, in my 88 formy, I didn't notice at first that the interior lights wire is dark brown and the ground (of course) is black. It was kinda dark at the time and I didn't notice, but I accidentally hooked the radio ground to my interior lights. As soon as I turned on my headlights with the radio on, my gauge cluster went black!
After I hooked it back up the right way, cursed at it, and replaced a couple fuses, it was all good. The moral of the story...Always use proper lighting!

Re: Help im a noob (cd player install)
^^Maybe I'm just super skilled then
It took all of 20 minuted to put it in; trying to fit a humount in there is a whole other story. I didn't have enough room to have a huge bulky plastic thing in there. It was really simple though, I just put a piece of cardboard to ensure solder didn't go where I didn't want it.
it doesn't really matter much either way though, if they have it at the store, use it; if they don't, leave it out (also leave out if going for a flush mount instead of a mount that sticks out an inch).

^^ if the kid has trouble putting a stereo in then i think that might be a little hard for him. also for us bigger people working in the interior of a small car is tuff stuff

Re: Help im a noob (cd player install)
Be careful when you install it, especially the wiring. Alot of cars are very sensitive when it comes to wiring extra stuff into it. Had a friend who screwed up his computer somehow when he tried to wire some crazy speakers an 2 (yes, plural) amps.

Re: Help im a noob (cd player install)
Sometimes knowing when to stop is good!
My brother went to school for electrical and he has a lot of tools, meters, etc. for that stuff. He's wired up houses and his own car (several times as he's changed things) and helped his own friends with theirs.
Yet, he still blew out a fuse when he was installing my new/old amp. He went into stupid mode and decided to cut the entire remnants of a butchered harness (cut and rewired several times, last time by the guy who stole my previous radio) and for a while I thought major damage had been done since we couldn't figure out for a while that it was just a fuse. It looked more severe but that was only because of prior juryrigging.
Now myself, I hate electronics so I would rather have someone do stuff like that. Mechanical stuff that doesn't need major adjustment, I'm all for that.
Unless the cost is way to high which prompts me to learn a new skill:
Skills learned so far:
Intake manifold replacement (along with fuel rail disassembly and other parts associated with this).
Rearend replacement (shocks, etc that go with this)
Brake caliper replacement
Now some electrical knowledge from helping with my radio, amp and the fixing of damaged stuff.
Throttle position sensor adjustment is the latest! Idling at 2000 rpm and code 22 until I figured this out along with my brother using his meter.
Anyways, my system is nice but I have a severe drain that I have to figure out. Right now I think it probably has something to do with my electric fan which is juryrigged 'always on' when the ignition is on.

I ended up just taking it to an audio place to get installed. Only 55 bucks to get installed and it comes with a 90 day warranty, so im pretty much happy with that sense of insurance. Thank you for all your help though it definitly helped me.
Let me telll ya! This new cd player sounds so nice with my stock speakers. I was not even expecting a change in sound. The quality is so nice and there is no static when i listen to the radio. I'm going to hook up my ipod to it soon, once i figure out how to switch into that mode.
Heres some pictures.

Re: Help im a noob (cd player install)
When I installed my Pioneer several years ago the main concern was getting all of the power wires hooked up correcty (main power, accessory and then the ground). For the speakers, with the head unit having power, I just set the fade to the back and balance to the left and tried the different wires until I had sound. Then set it up rear and right speaker and hooked up the wires until I had sound again and just continued until I had sound at all speakers and it was a done deal at that point. It may not be an efficient way to do it, but since I was a beginner it worked well for me. You can even just twist the wires together and use black electrical tape until you are confident that you have it set up right. Just do everything in the most simple way that makes sense to you and take it from there.
