hi everyone. i just want to share with you what i have as a sound system..

what im looking for a a very nice sounding audio system that does not incorporate a hugh 10 or 12 inch sub.

but id like SOME bass to be felt.. is it possible to carry this task out with speakers?? and no sub?

help me out please.. i checked what type of speakers are in the car. and they are some brand name...

a good set of 6x9s should produce a decent bit of bass or an 8 inch sub

 

When I get around to the sound system in my 89 RS, I'm looking to do something similar. Instead of 6X9 speakers in the sail panels, I'm looking to fabricate a small enclosure for a pair of flat 8" or 10" subs and use the kick panels as front stage. I haven't decided on what type of subs yet, but with amp gains tuned properly, it should sound decent.

 

there was a sound package that came with some of the third gens that already had 8 inch subs and a 5 inch speaker or something in the sails

 

those speakers arent too bad, i would personally suggest some kicker ks series all around. the are very warm, and have great bass response. the way you're going to get more bass out of them though, is to get an amp on them. no matter what speaker you use.

i actually have a 4-channel eclipse amp for sale that puts out 120wX4. its a great amp, im just not to the audio point on my car yet.

I was also hoping to go the no-sub route. I don't listen to rap or dance music so I figured I could manage with 6X9s. I don't like crazy bass but there was never quite enough. Last winter I built a small sub enclosure for a 10" woofer that takes up just over a third of the space in the cargo well and that has filled in the sound just nicely.

I think that an 8" would have been just fine for me. I say that because the tuner kids at work are always asking why I don't turn my subs on. But when they pop one of their CDs in I get nods of approval. The speaker is always live. My music just doesn't call for enough bass to shatter windows.

In case you're interested; I have 6X9s in the sail panels and the cargo area lid at the rear. JBL 4X6s take up the stock location in the dash and little tweeters are hung in the corners below the dash pad.

I've always felt that the speakers in the sail panels are just too close to the driver's ears so they are connected to their own amp with it's own gain turned down so as not to drown out everything else. I can also turn that amp off all together with a switch in the overhead console when my kids are in the back seat.

I will definitely be looking to build enclosures into the kick panels or door cards to finish things off this winter. Also, you can get a head unit that alows for output to more than just four speakers. Having full control over the signal going to each speaker would allow for a more balanced sound. Wouldn't mind getting one of them myself!

I believe 6X9's in the sail panels should be avoided at all cost's. They will ruin the sound stage in a Camaro due to the seating and their location. Those sail panels are however an ideal location for a pair of 8in free air subwoofers. The one thing you will need for this setup is a nice 4 or 6 channel amp (depending on how crazy you want to go with the front stage). There's quite a bit of room behind those sail panels and with some expanding foam and a nice MDF baffle boards to replace the old metal 6X9 mounts you can do a really nice, cheap setup.

 

My brother put 8" free air subs in his 99 formula in the rear speaker locations. Sounds GREAT.
Honestly tho you are going to want to have a sub at least a 8" to fill the bass throughout the cabin.
Keep the speakers in the car running all treble through an amp & equilizer and have the sub fill in the bass it will sound really nice remember you dont have to have the sub turned all the way up just turn the gains for the sub to a reasonable level.

You have two options if you DONT want a loud sub taking up alot of space and costing alot;
You can get a bazooka tube-Their cheap & easy to install and take up a very small amount of space.
Or you can do something like this

Sarcasms cute, honestly picture that box new in a car that wasnt under massive construction.
It wouldnt look bad, doesnt take up the well, its cheap and wouldnt have too much bass.

I had that out of my old pickup truck, im trying to sell it too for 25 bucks plus shipping hey ill even throw in the other sub grill

Since then iv upgraded with a custom box that takes up the whole well with two competition 10's. I dont mind the lack of trunk space but thats me.

 

Ive gotten away with some rather odd setups in our cars with no subs that left ppl shaking their heads and I cant explain why myself lol.Ive done a decent shallow mount component and put the mids in the 4x6 dash locations and the high in my kicks.I have old pioneer deck and in the menu I changed it from front/rear output to front/subwoofer and put in alpine type r 6x9s in the back and it sounded quite nice for no sub and no amp it seemed like a pair of 8's in the back and clean front end.Then I fully built my kicks and placed my mids there for some more mid range fill.Upgraded to a 6.5 component set and a 4channel amp and still kept the 6x9s as subs but i dynamatted the 6x9 cabins and that made a world of a difference and sourced out some 6x9 subs that played lower and that was great.I dont care for rear fillers..I prefer fronts and sub thats all Just like going to a concert..front stage and drum bass.They arent singing behind me :P nd then eventually for that extra lil kick in the seat I threw in a very shallow 10 in the bottm well thats ported and built a flat cover panel completly hidden and isnt gained high at all for a nice punch and low response and i cant be happier.People dont need more than what it can do for a daily driver and if i need more bas i can get more with the ten back there thats at almost zero gain

 

The freq range of your rear speakers only goes down to 45Hz so if you want to "feel" more bass then look for some that go as low as 20Hz. If you're handy with a Black & Decker then you could fashion a mounting shelf out of MDF to put the speakers in. Personally I wouldn't put speakers in the sail panels as you are limited to the depth you can fit in and the shallow cavity doesn't enhance the bass enough.

 

If you guys are looking to feel some bass, without the subs. You might want to start looking at component sets. The mid-woofer will help keep the lower freq clean. And the seperate tweeter keeps the lower freq from distorting the higher freq.

Now I've dealt with a lot of different companies. Memphis has some great component sets and the mid-woofers give out some great bass. But honestly, most higher end companies will do just as well. If you're going with some small subs, Clarion has some great highs.

I try to stay away from companies that dable in everything, like Sony and Pioneer, where the company budget can mess with R&D for one small section because they want to further advance another.

I had a pair of alpine 6x9 in the sail panel and I just upgraded to some infinity
693.9I 6x9 thay have way better bass than the alpine, crisper too, they are
driven by an old kenwood 80 watt rms per side amp, they pound pretty good.
I just bought an alpine PDX-4.100 amp, small size, awesome power. I havent
installed it yet. Im looking for some 4x6 speakers for the dash that will take
alot of power but also have a really nice sound.
I was just curious what the almani 4x6 sound like, anygood? I just want so-
mething that will just drop right in . I thought about maybe the infinity kappa
4x6, anyone have any suggestions.
Oh ya I havent put it in yet, I also just bought an infinity basslink, from what
Ive read it should compliment everything with a good amount of bass without
making my ears bleed.
I know Ive had some hearing loss over the years from working around equip-
ment and listening to hard pounding rock, but in my opinion infinity speakers
have the nicest sound.

 

maybe 6 speakers. kick panels. I doubt it will pound but you will get some good bass out of two extra speakers. if not like every1 else says get a 8" that will do the job. even if you only have to fill half the well at least you will still have some trunk space
You could also try one of those thin subs. they aren't cheap but they are extremly small but they say they pack a punch. probably hide that in a tiny box somewhere nicely.

 

You're not really going to get bass feel without a sub. I've had 8" in the sails and they worked fine. You could try a 8" sub in a box in the bottom half of the trunk while stil eaving room above for other things....or put a sub in place of the rear glove box so it's felt and not seen.
