I had Sony Xplods and they blew in about a year, but now I'm running some Pioneers and they sound great...
Re: whats the best 4x6 for my 88
lol I don't think any1 would recommend sony xplodes. ANYTHING! subs, amp, speakers they all suck. unless u got 50 bucks and you really want something.. thats the only ONLY time you get them.
Re: whats the best 4x6 for my 88
i would recomend sony explode 4x6 from walmart. a 4x6 is a 4x6 they dont put out much it is basicly just a tweeter, spending more than 40 dollars on a pair of 4x6's is a waste of money they are all about the same unless they are like 10 dollar durabrands or somethng

Polk audio makes some really nice speakers for the money. The best combo I've found has been Alpine for the amplifier and Polk (Front) / Memphis (Rear) for speakers.

I also have the Alpines in mine. They sound great, and weren't too expensive. $100 installed for a pair of fronts at car tunes here in MI

if money isnt the object, i would by the oz audio 3 way component set, throw the 6 1/2 in the door (make a panel) and put the 4" and tweet up top. you'll have to make a plate, but thats not hard. thing is....you HAVE to amp those speakers, they will blow so fast if you dont.
PS: they run about $780 for the pair. just sayin =D

First off what kind of speakers do you have in the rest of your car or is it stock. but if money isnt a issue you might wanna check to see if they make 4x6 bostons there a amazing brand but price is a little high. i just bought all new speakers in my 92 25th anaversery camaro and i decided to go with kickers the 4x6's where really nice and they dropped the price down from 80 to 50 for me and i installed them my self because it was only like a 3-5 minute job. either way best of luck to you

I put Pioneer 3 way 4x6s in my truck, and they are clear as a bell. Whoever said they are like tweeters is correct. The clarity of the pioneer 4x6s is spectacular for the price. I got mine for 40-50 bucks. Make sure you get 3 way speakers, not 2. If you feel fancy then maybe you should look at 4 way speakers.

I wouldnt go for sony's tend to blow easily not good quality. Personaly i dont like pioneer, i went for alpine type S 4x6's i have them in 6x9's also and they sound good, if youre really looking to spend some money i go with type R's and hook them to an amp, only problem is that alpine no longer make 4x6 type R's so if you modified the front speaker holes to fit 6.5's in you'll have a killer system 4x6's arent as good as 6.5's anyway

Re: whats the best 4x6 for my 88
The only reason I would ever do 4X6's is if the install had to be completely stock looking. If you do end up going this route I would try and find a set with silk tweeters, the way the 4X6's fire into the glass you really don't want a very bright tweeter up there. Polks are good speakers and generally sound warm and will work decently in the dash position. The best 4X6's I've ever heard are the Orion Cobalts I have installed in my truck, they're basic 4X6 coaxials with a large silk tweeter and an external crossover. Now more on this point, if you don't care what you spend I would highly recommend you get a good 6 1/2in component set and have a pair of door pods or kick panels (I hate kicks but some people dig them) built for your car, you'll get far superior sound this way.
